Kunstenfestival Watou is almost entering its final week, bringing an exciting month and a half of alien encounters and installation expeditions to a close. Over the past few weeks, visitors have stepped into the otherworldly universe we created as ANT Collective across three different spaces in the village, with many heartwarming reactions along the way.

The project has also attracted attention in the press, including Dutch newspapers de Volkskrant and NRC, as well as Flemish newspaper De Standaard, alongside coverage of the festival’s wider programme.

Haven’t experienced our new installation ‘the effort of settling’ in person yet? Now is your last chance! Come and visit us in Watou until 30 August.

‘The effort of settling’ combines contributions by @karlaparedesk, @fedrik____vaessen and @noazuidervaart with works from the collection of @smakgent, donations from the people of Watou and a textual contribution by @vincentvanmeenen

The project is commissioned by @kunstenfestivalwatou. The festival is curated by @daniellevanzuijlen, @bart.lodewijks & @michaelvandebril. ANT Collective is generously supported by the European Union, @goetheinstitut and @stichtingstokroos. by @karlaparedesk

The Effort of Settling

Is a new installation by @antartcollective, unfolding across three spaces at @kunstenfestivalwatou. Here are some impressions from another room at the Parrouichehuis in Watou.

Our project inhabits three empty spaces in the village of Watou, transforming them during the festival into temporary habitats for an extraterrestrial civilisation. In doing so, we mirror our own position as temporary visitors within the village.
At the centre of this imagined world is the alien, a figure of the outsider and the unknown. It opens up questions around other forms of otherness, including the animal, the hybrid, the more than human and everything that resists fixed categories.
With The Effort of Settling, we invite visitors to reconsider what it means to belong and how the borders and labels we create shape our understanding of what is other.

I am so happy and grateful to be part of ANT Collective and to have contributed to this work together.
The work was made possible through the contributions of:
@noazuidervaart, @fedrik____vaessen, @karlaparedesk, the donations of the habitants of Watou, works from the collection of @smakgent and the poems of @vincentvanmeenen.

The Effort of Settling is on view until 30 August and is commissioned by @kunstenfestivalwatou.
Curators: @daniellevanzuijlen, @bart.lodewijks and @michaelvandebril

ANT collective is kindly supported by @goetheinstitut, @stichtingstokroos and the European Union.

More impressions from the other spaces coming soon. ✨ by @karlaparedesk

For Kunstenfestival Watou we invited village residents to donate ordinary objects through a letter campaign. From beer coasters to vacuum cleaners, these everyday belongings became part of our new installation ‘the effort of settling’, alongside works from the collection of S.M.A.K. and our own artworks. By bringing together objects with different histories and statuses, the installation questions how context shapes the value we assign to things.

Following our usual methodology, the installation also includes every aspect of the artistic process: books, sketches, notes, floor plans, e-mail conversations, unfinished works and failed experiments are presented alongside completed artworks. Rather than separating process from outcome, the installation exposes its own making.

Installed across several vacant spaces in Watou, the project echoes ‘Chambres d'Amis’ (1986), Jan Hoet’s landmark exhibition that brought contemporary art into private homes and laid the foundations for the museum in Gent. Both projects investigate how art can transform beyond traditional exhibition spaces, while questioning who is invited to participate in its creation and interpretation.

Through encounters between donated objects, museum works and artistic processes, ‘the effort of settling’ examines ideas of authorship, categorisation and value. What is recognised as art and what remains amateur or anonymous? Who is considered an insider or outsider within a community? And when does something feel familiar or alien?

‘The effort of settling’ combines contributions by @karlaparedesk, @fedrik____vaessen and @noazuidervaart with works from the collection of @smakgent, donations from the people of Watou and a textual contribution by @vincentvanmeenen

Each summer, the quiet rural village of Watou becomes a stage for art and poetry as around 20.000 visitors arrive for Kunstenfestival Watou. This seasonal migration forms the point of departure for ANT Collective's new installation ‘the effort of settling’.

Our project infiltrates three spaces scattered throughout the village. Outside the festival period, these places remain empty and unused. During the festival, however, we transform them into habitats for an extraterrestrial civilisation, mirroring our own position as a temporary presence within Watou.

The alien is at the centre of this imagined world. As a recurring figure in science fiction, it represents the outsider: a visitor from another planet. At the same time, it becomes a lens through which to consider broader forms of otherness, including the animal, the more-than-human, the hybrid, the esoteric, the ambiguous, and all that resists fixed definitions. Perhaps the alien is closer to ourselves than we imagine, becoming foreign through the borders, labels and distinctions we create.

With ‘the effort of settling’, we invite visitors to reflect on the notion of the alien and to reconsider how acts of categorising shape our understanding of belonging and otherness.

‘The effort of settling’ combines contributions by @karlaparedesk, @fedrik____vaessen and @noazuidervaart with works from the collection of @smakgent, donations from the people of Watou and a textual contribution by @vincentvanmeenen

It’s almost time for Kunstenfestival Watou!

Over the past two years, Karla Paredes, Fedrik Vaessen and I developed a project under the name of our newly founded ANT Collective, made specifically for this very special arts festival in the countryside of West-Flanders, Belgium. The experience was so rewarding and proved, once again, that collaboration is as much fun as it is a struggle. I’m so grateful for my two wonderful friends, my dear co-ants, and proud of the mega, mega installation we made, infiltrating three different buildings and including over a thousand objects (which, I have to admit, is a wild and probably wildly exaggerated guess).

Our installation includes donations from the people of Watou; works by i.a. Roe Ethridge, Oksana Pasaiko en Angel Vergara Santiago from the collection of the S.M.A.K.; and, of course, pieces from our joint and individual practices: sketches, notes, letters, studio leftovers, failed attempts, found objects and finished artworks.

We really created a big, chaotic and very lovely mess for you to get lost in.

Kunstenfestival Watou opens to the public on 15 July. We hope to see you there. And if not, please try to make some time to visit before the festivals ending on the 30 August. There are so many interesting projects on view. It’s really worth it.

A big thank you to festival curators, Danielle van Zuijlen and Bart Lodewijks, for making the collaboration with S.M.A.K. possible, for their care, trust, and for everything else. The project is commissioned by Kunstenfestival Watou. ANT Collective is generously supported by the European Union, Goethe-Institut and Stichting Stokroos.
