The Effort of Settling

Is a new installation by @antartcollective, unfolding across three spaces at @kunstenfestivalwatou. Here are some impressions from another room at the Parrouichehuis in Watou.

Our project inhabits three empty spaces in the village of Watou, transforming them during the festival into temporary habitats for an extraterrestrial civilisation. In doing so, we mirror our own position as temporary visitors within the village.
At the centre of this imagined world is the alien, a figure of the outsider and the unknown. It opens up questions around other forms of otherness, including the animal, the hybrid, the more than human and everything that resists fixed categories.
With The Effort of Settling, we invite visitors to reconsider what it means to belong and how the borders and labels we create shape our understanding of what is other.

I am so happy and grateful to be part of ANT Collective and to have contributed to this work together.
The work was made possible through the contributions of:
@noazuidervaart, @fedrik____vaessen, @karlaparedesk, the donations of the habitants of Watou, works from the collection of @smakgent and the poems of @vincentvanmeenen.

The Effort of Settling is on view until 30 August and is commissioned by @kunstenfestivalwatou.
Curators: @daniellevanzuijlen, @bart.lodewijks and @michaelvandebril

ANT collective is kindly supported by @goetheinstitut, @stichtingstokroos and the European Union.

More impressions from the other spaces coming soon. ✨

Being embedded in ulterior layers

“In the opening chapter of Jane Bennett’s Vibrant Matter, she describes the contents of a storm drain in Chesapeake Bay. Gathered together in liquid currents, object-assemblages oscillate between debris and a thing-in- itself composed of various conglomerate components. The possibility of the autonomy of objects is put into question, as it was defined by modernism and the object of Modern Art. In denying this possibility, the contemporary frames a new paradigm in which a stage acknowledges correlation. Context, proximity, and trace define an entangled landscape made of multiplicities and closely tied to Bruno Latour’s actor-network-theory.
Being Embedded in Ulterior Layers brings together the work of 5 artists who use the exhibition space like archeologists, magicians, foragers, and material poets. The space is conceptually aligned with geological strata - a landscape that can quickly tell an expert eye about millenia of the region’s tellurian history. The visitor is first confronted by a panorama as a thing in itself, but like the curious eye of the archeologist, details reveal their own stories, connections, and keys to the narrative.
The structural element of the exhibition are leftover bricks from the garden surrounding Odapark - remnants from past projects that are reassembled into new forms. The concept of cyclical assemblage runs through the bricks as well as the artist’s work in which objects, elements of old works, and materials from the studio can be reused, altered, and reformulated into new ephemeral art objects. This material philosophy breaks concepts of linearity that ascribe a timeline to artworks and their inviolability in favour of a more flexible circular return of the object and the artwork in organic cycles of life.”

Some fresh pics from the exhibition „being embedded in ulterior layers“ @stichtingodapark. Foto 1-4, 6, 7, 9 Moniek Op den Camp. Foto 5, 10 Karla Paredes K.

It was a wonderful experience to work in group again towards an installation work that unifies old work, new work as well as work in progress. Furthermore our work reflects on time and how processes of doing and materiality stayed layered and secret to our eyes. In addition the collective process of discussion, conversation and plural-determinations is the core of our joint work.
The acceptance of variety and difference make an environment prosperous and save !!!!!

Many thanks to all the volunteers of OdaPark and to Joep and Hester for the kind support.

We are very grateful to have to the opportunity to work with @angelsmiralda , that brought us an amazing booklet with an amazing text and glossary about the project.

We also wanna thank Klaartje @kunstpodiumt for luckily bring us together.

Finally a kind reminder ! The exhibition is on display until the 2nd of June! @marie.civikov
