I am SO glad i didn’t skip ‘The Cloisters’ at the bookshop.
The story was captivating, in a gothic academia setting like i’ve never read before. With topics of research around occult & tarot history, as a witch this was right up my alley!

I didn’t expect the story to be so thrilling, the mysteries were very intriguing, the plot twists were WILD.

@heykatyhays has a beautiful style of prose, with vivid descriptions of the setting, and fully realized characters that are hiding things you can’t quite put a finger on.

I rate this novel as a 4.5/5⭐️ by @kassiethetomewormwitch

This experience was organized by @readbyrazan & @__adabiyat__ 💚❤️🖤🤍

‘Our Cut of Salt’ written by @deenahlm kicked off my October reading journey.

The difference between this read and the rest of my October TBR is that this is the truest form of horror that is happening right now and has been happening for ages.
While the characters are meant to be “fictional” i found none of it as such, including the haunted house, which was also its own character.

My most consistent emotion throughout this read was ANGER. Especially considering that my beloved grandmother was from Haifa, which is where the story is set in.

I will not be rating this book in stars, as it gives voice to the humans that had theirs stripped.

I was pleasantly surprised with the depth of this book.
With the format being a collection of short stories speaking about the experience of black women through longing and going after their desires in religious communities, where they get to drop the mask when nobody’s watching.

I found the stories deeply reflective.
My favorite was ‘how to make love to a physicist’.

@deeshaphilyaw ‘s writing style reminded me of Sylvia Plath. Beautiful, poetic, so human.

@sara.badawieh is an example of Jordanian excellence.

The story follows our FMC ‘Skye’/‘Sama’ on her struggles being a single mother that is surrounded by angry men, mainly her controlling brother ‘Bahar’.

Sara paints the honest picture of the harassment of women working in male-dominated fields, the double standards of leading a different lifestyle, and the dangers that smoking can lead to.

None of the characters in this book are lovable and I saw it to be intentional.
With the main focus being the flaws of said characters, which as a Jordanian, I’ve met all of these characters in real life and I loved the fact @sara.badawieh captured these people perfectly.

I loved that the setting was my hometown, loved the familiar names, and I loved the boldly honest pen of the author.

Sara Badawieh I applaud you. 👏🏻

This irregular witch approves of ‘The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches’

@sangumandanna wrote a simply written yet impact-fully delivered message on love, chosen family, oppression, loneliness, and growth. It shows what beauty love can offer when you allow yourself to love and be loved freely.
This was a very cozy, wholesome read.

I loved the diversity of characters that are included in this book!

The pace was fast, the settings were beautifully depicted, and the characters are very lovable.

I recommend this read especially for the fall 🍂

@sangumandanna keep the good work brewing 💜

‘Grave Flowers’ told me a story of how growth happens in the most unlikely places.

As I saw it, the story follows Princess Madalina’s journey from being too comfortable in the cold darkness, to learning acceptance of the warming light.

This fable is a fantasy painted using the shades of psychological trauma and the human experience of healing.

I loved how the “Grave Flowers” were their own respective characters, I loved the vividly detailed settings, and I felt inspired by the descriptions of the garments worn!

I’m convinced @autumn__krause ‘s ink is pure gold.

I feel LUCKY to exist at the same time as @olivieblake

Masters of Death is my first and most certainly not last read of Olivie’s works of art.

The story follows a bunch of mythological creatures (Vampires, Demons, Angels, Reapers, etc…) through a “quest to save the world” In a very unique and very human take, showing the truth of not needing to reinvent the wheel to give a story its own unique identity that also reflects the author’s own.

I found the main theme of Mortality vs Immortality in this novel deeply reflective and powerful, telling of what really matters in life.

I feel so deeply in love with the storytelling, the diverse yet deep characters, and most of all, Olivie’s beautiful art that is her writing.
