REVIEW #201 - ‘The Master and the Margarita’ by Mikhail Bulgakov (written 1928 - 1940, published posthumously 1967) What a way to kick off the next hundredth of my reviews! with a re-read of a favourite. Happy to confirm it remains a firm favourite easily taking a spot in my top 5 books of all time. There’s so much going on in this mad, twisted, personal book that this second time around has revealed so many more things that I didn’t quite notice the first time round. What happens when the Devil himself and his retinue descend upon 1930s Moscow and cause untold havoc on the citizens via japes, pranks, and The Truth? Why, this book of course! ☝️🤓 The definition of absurdity, Woland (the Devil’s alias) acts as an opposing force to the overwhelming bureaucracy that inhabits Moscow, taking us on a wild ride through theatrical shows, dismemberment, insane asylums, and the Devil’s own ball to boot. Something I didn’t appreciate when I first read the book was the presence of bureaucratic processes. It’s hard to miss, but this time around I really understood what Bulgakov was trying to say. Permits, bureaus, passports, money, identity cards - Moscow in this book is overwhelmingly reliant on ephemeral items in order to operate. Far from governmental oppression, the entire city seems eager and willing to throw suspicion on another if documents aren’t in order - Bulgakov presents this as an affront to humanity, and demonstrates it best via Woland and his absurdist crew. They don’t abide by laws of physics, frequently use illusions and superficiality, and Woland himself says that a ‘fact is the most stubborn thing in the world’, casting doubt on the very concept of what rely on for notions of truth. He truly is whimsy’s final boss, acting in complete opposition to grand narratives of history and indeed reality. Another aspect I found I appreciated more was the side narrative of Pontius Pilate. Far from a distraction to the story, this is the heart and soul of the story overall, a parallel story that frames the tension of a novel outside of the absurdism of the Moscow storyline - CONTINUED IN COMMENTS
