Although ‘A Los Animales los Mata el Sol’ has come to a close, the conversation continues.

We recently sat down with Erick Víquez to discuss the ideas that shape his practice, from the notion of a rural gothic to the role of color, memory, and the tropical landscape in his paintings.

A special thank you to Laundromat Art Space for opening your doors and generously lending us your space to realize this exhibition.

Thank you as well to everyone who joined us for the opening and closing receptions, spent time with the exhibition, and supported Erick’s work. The thoughtful conversations, engagement, and encouragement throughout the past month made this presentation especially meaningful.

Drawing from photographic archives and vernacular histories, Víquez’s paintings inhabit a rural landscape marked by distance, silence, and lingering tension. In these works, the tropics emerge not as a site of abundance, but as a psychologically charged space where memory and atmosphere shape the image as much as the landscape itself.

Our current exhibition, ‘A Los Animales los Mata el Sol’, featuring new works by Erick Víquez, is on view through July 8 at Laundromat Art Space.

Drawing from photographic archives, vernacular histories, and literary references, Víquez’s paintings reimagine the tropics as psychologically charged landscapes where memory, estrangement, and historical tension converge. Rather than presenting the tropics as a place of abundance or escape, Víquez’s paintings inhabit a landscape shaped by distance, heat, and lingering tension, where familiarity gradually gives way to something stranger.

The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday, 12–4 PM, and by appointment. Stop by to experience the exhibition in person, or send us a DM with any questions.

On view through July 8 at Laundromat Art Space, ‘A Los Animales los Mata el Sol’ (Animals Die in the Sun), marks Erick Víquez’s first solo exhibition in Miami and his first presentation with ALA Projects.

Drawing from photographic archives, vernacular histories, and literary references, Víquez’s paintings reimagine the tropics as psychologically charged landscapes where memory, estrangement, and historical tension converge. Rather than sites of abundance or escape, these rural scenes hold a quiet unease: spaces where, in the artist’s words, light “crushes more than it illuminates.”

If you’re visiting Little Haiti Little River Art Days today, stop by between 12–5 PM to experience the exhibition and learn more about the work.
