Still not fulled yet-it needs a sunny day to dry, but it’s done. 3 handwoven plaid panels sewed together with a modified mattress stitch…. I think it’s a simple whip stitch.

Time to store this Polwarth: Ive washed, sorted into colours, picked, flicked, drumcarded and handspun it. Definitely enjoyed every bit of learning about this fine wool- now to store it until I decide what to do with it!

Polwarth is a considered a fine wool, which are beautifully bouncy and soft, but they do need proper tools for processing.
My preference prepping them in the past, was using my fine combs, but my wrists ache too much these days for that.
Sooooo, I bought a drumcarder for general medium range fleeces, and was hopeful when I was told some fine wools like this one, and fine Corriedale and Finn would probably be ok. So far I’ve had no problem! No nepping, no huge wastage.

I’ve experimented with these batts, and have only done a single pass so far, and have had quite a bit of wastage. The best outcome, I found, was to align the opened locks and thinly spread them on the tray. Still had a lot of neps on the scoured fleece, but I’ll see how I go with the next couple of passes.

Does anyone use a 72tpi drum carder for fine wools? Any tips?

Rainy day fibre prep. This is fine Polwarth fleece; shorter locks but fluffs up beautifully. Whether you comb or drum card this fleece, there’s a lot of wastage- I had a lot of neps and second cuts to throw away… but just look at those floofy batts- single pass only, (until I decide how to use this gorgeous wool).
