Polwarth is a considered a fine wool, which are beautifully bouncy and soft, but they do need proper tools for processing.
My preference prepping them in the past, was using my fine combs, but my wrists ache too much these days for that.
Sooooo, I bought a drumcarder for general medium range fleeces, and was hopeful when I was told some fine wools like this one, and fine Corriedale and Finn would probably be ok.
.
I’ve experimented with these batts, and have only done a single pass so far, and have had quite a bit of wastage. The best outcome, I found, was to align the opened locks and thinly spread them on the tray. Still had a lot of neps on the scoured fleece, but I’ll see how I go with the next couple of passes.
 .
Does anyone use a 72tpi drum carder for fine wools? Any tips?

I’ve used a blending board for great results.

Have you seen or heard of a lockpop? They are easier on the hands than other tools and work really well

I use a drum carder but I hand card before. I do a method where I comb my wool with the hand carders essentially first which removes debris and neps. I then card to put into a nice clean bat. I am usually not happy with just using drum carder on its own.

I do. I usually blend fine wools with medium wools. I flick locks first to minimize neps and do several passes. I bought an additional higher TPI drum to swap out with my 72 to see if I can cut down on passes.
