My first triathlon. My first Olympic distance. And somehow, my first age-group win! 🥇 @bbsctri
🏊🏼‍♀️ 1,500m Swim | 🚴🏻‍♀️ 24.8mi Bike | 🏃🏻‍♀️ 6.2mi Run

The days leading up to race day, I was a bundle of nerves (although I don’t think I let it show 😝). I carb-loaded on ridiculous amounts of white rice and bagels, rested, and reminded myself that I had trained for this.

Once I found my rhythm in the water, the nerves settled and I genuinely enjoyed the swim. I wasn’t chasing a time. My goal was simply to stay consistent.

After what felt like the longest walk EVER to transition, I got on my bike. Cycling is still new to me, so consistency was the focus (although I did hit 33 mph downhill! 😳). What surprised me most was the silence. No music, no distractions…just the wind, other bikes, and my thoughts becoming quieter. It was unexpectedly meditative and one of my favorite parts of the race.

Then came the run. 🫠 The uphill climb onto the course was BRUTAL, followed by three miles of stomach and diaphragm cramps, but I kept moving. That final downhill stretch was EVERYTHING! I had enough energy to sprint, with James, my coach @navin.triathlon, and new tri friends @slippers.outside @wagnificent7 @_jun.tau_ cheering as I crossed the finish line!!! 🥹

This hilly course was quite the challenge for my first triathlon, but I’m so glad I went for it. And somehow, I finished FIRST in my age group! 🥇 Granted…I later learned there were only two of us 😹, but a new tri friend @jrdurazo reminded me that results don’t tell the whole story. They don’t show who started but didn’t finish, or who never had the courage to sign up. Just showing up, embracing the challenge, and crossing that finish line is something to be proud of. 🥹

Grateful for the courage to TRI (😝), the perseverance to train, and a mind strong enough to lead when the body gets tired.

The Teton Crest Trail 🏔️

Four days of carrying everything we needed on our backs, sleeping under the stars, getting lost, being colder than we’ve ever been on any of our other thru-hikes 🥶, climbing mountain passes, laughing, hurting, and watching the Tetons transition into fall around us. 🍂

This year has been BUSY, so our backpacking trip had to be shorter and later in the season than usual. But there was something really special about that timing. We got to experience the trail with the fall foliage starting to show…yellows, oranges, and reds mixed into the mountains and alpine landscape. It felt completely different from any of our previous backpacking trips. 🍁🏔️

There’s something about backpacking that strips life down to the simplest things - where you’re going, where you’ll sleep, whether you’re warm, when you’ll eat, and just putting one foot in front of the other. In that simplicity, everything else gets a little quieter.

This was our third big backpacking adventure together, and every year I’m reminded how much I love doing this. 🤎

The Teton Crest Trail was cold, beautiful, humbling, and absolutely unforgettable.

Another trail in the books and already looking forward to the next. 🥾✨

Something is definitely happening over here. 🥹

Ran 7+ miles this morning and, for the first time, I walked back through my front door feeling like… nothing happened. 😹 Not wiped out. Not depleted. I felt like I could’ve turned around and ran another 7 miles.

I don’t know if I’m finally figuring out how to fuel properly, if the engine is actually being built (or probably a little bit of both), but I’m excited.

It’s funny how progress doesn’t always show up as faster or farther. Sometimes it’s realizing that the distance that used to take something out of you suddenly just… doesn’t anymore.

Successful first Open Water swim yesterday! 🥳

Last year, James said he wanted to run a half marathon, so after 17 years off I reluctantly joined him. One Rock’n’Roll Vegas later… things escalated.

Now I’m training for my first Olympic tri and Ironman 70.3. 😹

Grateful these seasoned athletes let me crash their party.

A glimpse of Zion’s beauty in 90 seconds. ⛰️

I’m already looking forward to getting back into the wilderness next month.

A couple of years ago, after thru-hiking the John Muir Trail, James and I decided that no matter how busy life gets, we’d make time for at least one backpacking trip every year.

There’s something about unplugging from the noise, carrying everything you need on your back, and spending a few days immersed in nature that helps you reconnect - with the world, with each other, and with yourself.

It’s been an eventful, busy year. September can’t come soon enough. 🥾 by @katalyst.being

Brick day. 🚴🏽‍♀️➡️🏃🏻‍♀️

A brick workout is a bike ride followed immediately by a run to help prepare your body for race-day transitions. Let’s just say… the first few steps are memorable. 😅

Every workout gets me a little closer to my Olympic triathlon this fall. And hopefully by next year, James will have swimming down so we can train for - and finish - a 70.3 together. 🏊🏽‍♂️ by @katalyst.being

Every person has an inner world that no one else can fully see.

A lifetime of memories, relationships, losses, hopes, fears, and moments that shaped who they are.

Sometimes I think of people as living libraries 📚. We only ever see the cover, but there are entire volumes inside that often go unseen.

One of the things I’m learning to appreciate most about this work is that people sometimes invite you into those pages…not to fix them or write the story for them, but simply to be with them as they make sense of it.

That’s a privilege I don’t take lightly. 🙏🏽 taken in Red Rock Counseling by @katalyst.being

I’ve been studying #dopamine this week and one idea has been following me into every workout.

Most of us were taught that dopamine is the brain’s “feel-good” chemical, but it’s actually more accurate to think of dopamine as the neurotransmitter that drives motivation, anticipation, and learning.

One of the ideas that stood out to me in “Dopamine Nation” by Dr. Anna Lembke is that our brains are constantly trying to maintain balance. When we’re surrounded by endless sources of quick pleasure - our phones, social media, shopping, food, entertainment - we gradually need more stimulation to experience the same level of reward.

The opposite is also true.

When we intentionally choose meaningful challenges, we expand our capacity for discomfort. Over time, the things that once felt difficult often become more manageable, and ordinary moments can become rewarding again.

That’s what this season of life has become for me.

🏋🏻‍♀️ Lifting when I’d rather sleep.
🏊🏻‍♀️ Swimming when I’m tired.
🚴🏻‍♀️ Long rides that test my patience.
🏃🏻‍♀️ Runs that remind me I can keep going.
🧘🏻‍♀️ Yoga that asks me to slow down instead of speed up.

I’m not training because I enjoy suffering (too much), but because I’m learning that resilience isn’t something we wait for - it’s something we practice.

As a student therapist, I find that this extends far beyond fitness. #Healing isn’t about avoiding discomfort or chasing it, but about gradually increasing our capacity to stay present with life’s challenges without letting them define us.

Maybe that’s what #growth really is. by @katalyst.being
