Short notes from my process of creating the purple columbine flower
I had often looked at the columbine as it grows along a path I frequently pass and knew it quite well, but recreating it in paper requires a much closer observation. I study every tiny detail of the plant and make rough sketches first, mainly to get a sense of the proportions and shapes. The actual templates are then created from paper, which allows me to adjust even the smallest details until I am fully satisfied with the final form. (see fast draft in white on picture 1 and the way to getting there on picture 4)
Once all the pieces are cut out, the painting process begins. I try to make sublte color variations that give the plant a sense of aliveness. To achieve a richer purple tone, I had to apply two layers of paint. After the paint dries, I add a very thin coat of matte Mod Podge, which enhances the depth of the colors.
Each petal is shaped by hand and then assembled into a flower.
And about the thin stamens — they are simply the result of extremely slow and careful cutting.
And this is just the beginning…

A tussie-mussie is a small, hand-held bouquet of flowers designed to communicate secret messages through the language of flowers in the Victorian era - pansies mean: I am thinking of you.

My small posy of pansies is made from hand-painted washi paper. I am working on thoughtfully simplifying the typical patterns of pansy petals and creating a joyful, pastel-colored bouquet.
