POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Remember when we drove and drove and drove. You moved to Colorado, and I came along. We hit so many parks, saw too many exit signs, and got not enough sleep. We played vinyls off a record player plugged into the car cigarette lighter. I journaled and photographed, while you curated the music.

Now, it’s my turn to move. And you will reminisce from the other side of the country. We were best friends chasing a western dream, with beauty and turmoil and sub freezing overnight campouts and cans of lukewarm soup.

The balloons of years past, in color and monochrome film. I brought each to capture the vibrancy but also the historic nature of the event.

A few folks I know saw them rise and fall last weekend, and I looked back at my own experience fondly—like a Pixar film in real time.

It was warm, but the vibes were crispy at @youthgardenproject. Pumpkin this, and flower crown that. Lots of laughter echoed as kiddos explored and raced, meanwhile @nutellablades seemed to scoop more garden blue ribbons than anyone else. My autumn-loving heart rejoiced a bit.

Istanbul, in horiztonals, from #mylenstoyoureyes. It is all the juxtapositions: traditional and modern, vibrant and muted, east and west, Europe and Asia. I didn’t know what to expect and left content.

I crossed the strait on a boat, touched a new continent, drank more coffee than I should have, and named street cats. I saw how people marvel at a fully loaded bicycle that has traveled from China. I heard the call five times a day echoing in the streets. I stood underground where water once filled up to the ceiling. I took my camera, clicked, and painted with light.

It’s pretty funny how “the cape” doesn’t mean much this far west. I would have a little geography lesson with folks when I mentioned traveling east for the holiday. Us New Englanders know - this is the primo spot for early September.
-
I spent quality, chilly beach time with the best girls and @marydeneen’s family. I breathed some salty air, wiggled my toes in the sand, and watched wholesome pick up baseball games between kids. Time slowed down to cape speed: hot coffee in the mornings, pizza while watching sunset over the bay, and cheers’ing to friendship that has withstood nearly two decades.

If this is what happens to film after more than six security scanners, then I’m okay with it.

This is Istanbul, in verticals, from #mylenstoyoureyes. I haven’t used this hashtag since my Europe life in 2015, but it seemed fitting to unearth. I forgot how simple it is to photograph these old cities, filled with people of all ages and backgrounds.

This road was built for such a different purpose than today. It evolved to become one of the premier destinations outside Moab. It has and will continue to be a management challenge, a headache, and literally full of bumps and holes. It defies what should have been possible to see by car, motorcycle, or bike.
-
Last week, I took my last work patrol on this road. I took two cameras. I stopped frequently. I chatted with strangers about the view. I put the windows down and waved. I said goodbye to the road that shaped my first season and played a part in subsequent ones.

What do you call the first yellow color of the season? Is it maize, or sunflower, or the initial hue of golden hour? This particular shade felt whimsically pale. Green took its last breath under a stormy sky before passing the torch for the season.

Golden Gate Canyon has never disappointed. Thank you for being a close by high altitude spot to enjoy what makes fall so special. State parks rock too! 🍂

Recently a friend said this time of year is either “freeze or fry” weather. Mid-September turned out to be toastier than we expected, but that didn’t stop us from celebrating atop a red rock overlook with parasols and sunscreen.

My lovely friend @slickrock_sierra married @thrash.daddy and they threw quite a party for friends and family. Congratulations to you both, and happy trails! May you continue adventuring far and wide, raising a wild child pup, and growing in love and appreciation for each other.

Saying goodbye to Moab is something I’m familiar with. It is never simple. This place has both given me direction and made me feel hopelessly lost. It has given me sunburns, headaches, bug bites, injuries, and fatigue. But there have also been sunsets, starry skies, joyful reunions, laughter, and sharing in a common appreciation for a desert unmatched.

With just a few weeks left and no real plan beyond this, the relief and stress share space.

This is for all the wildland firefighters continuing to work day after day. It is more than just a “dry” year. There is measurable data showing larger, more severe, and more costly fires burning over the past decade. Some years it seems quieter, and then something big comes along. Three fires in Utah alone were larger than 100,000 acres, and it’s only mid August. The Pacific Northwest has been battling large complexes while intense fire behavior means structures and communities are threatened faster than ever.
-
Do your part. Respect fire bans, drown your campfires when you’re allowed to have them, and be conscious of what small sparks can do in certain conditions. Continue to pay attention even after a local fire is mostly contained. It may seem incomprehensible and overwhelming when looking at the numbers and areas on the news, but don’t let that be an excuse to not recreate responsibly.

This is Italy through the lens of regular people. It’s a collection that felt more photojournalistic than creative. The landscapes were just backdrops for the stories I’d never know about strangers.
-
They live in medieval cities, along mountainsides, and in coastal towns. Everyday lives coexist with structures generations old.
