“Walk Gently” is my newest linocut series, it signifies how I aim to move every single day. With gentleness and care for myself and everyone around me. This series was born out of a process of exploring what it means to put my hands on the work that matters most to me, all while ensuring my body and mind are cared for intentionally. Linocut insists upon both planning and fluidity. You have to prep your sketches and your blocks with intention, but carving makes way for learning to live with mishaps and rolling along with them. Printmaking has taught me patience, you have to surrender yourself to the process.

Years ago I asked for support for my body and mind, I asked for help in caring for myself; an act I have struggled with most of my life. When it was answered with an endometriosis diagnoses I was angry but deeply relieved. I had a reason. A reason my body felt weak and my mind foggy. My body answered with an insistence of care; non-negotiable compassion. It’s been less than a year since my diagnosis. This process is lifelong. It’s not easy, I’m often still angry, I’m still resistant, but I owe those parts of myself grace just as much as I owe myself rest and care.

Keep putting your hands on the work that matters, all parts of the process are vital.

It’s difficult to sit in the reality of two years.

I’ve been making a lot this year. Between school and personal work. It’s not as much as I’d like but the process in creating & moving has been cathartic.

It’s healing to share my work with my people. Do I ever miss hearing “that’s awesome, Kate” from Alex.
I can hear him loving this one.

Inspired by sketches from the trip we take to honour him. A trip we were supposed to take with him. We take pieces of him with us every year now and I know he’s travelling nibi & aki with us.

Baamaapii niijikiwenh a black ink linocut print on white paper. A tree sits atop a rock/island/aki (land) stylized by wavy lines and rings of odd circles and flowing shapes.
Nibi (water) flows under the rock in pointed waves of thick and thin lines.
Flows of lines move up tonframe the top of the rock and high around the tree, emblematic of moving fire and energy.
A crescent moon sits within the circle of the full moon, contrasted by horizontal clouds mixing into the complete view of the moon. by @katedaltn

One of my greatest tools has been creating. Moving through grief has been so different for me this time around. I became so stagnant after my Papa passed, which compounded when we lost my dear Uncle Karl. I had lost the will to create because I couldn’t see any value in putting things into the world that I couldn’t share with the people I lost, men who were part of my support system and always encouraged me so deeply along with the rest of my family. Then we lost Alex, who was always rooting for me & so deeply supportive of everything I did. Then losing Ward, my mentor, so soon after my brother. He was a man who was an Uncle to me and he was so pivotal in my career as an artist.
I realized the best that I can do, is do.
Do for those who can’t anymore, do for my own process, and do so I have stories to tell them when we met again.

I SEE YOU #5 I don’t even know you but I see you by Hannia Cheng is OUT! (LINK IN BIO)

Here comes the new piece from Hannia, high-spirited community cheer leader, artist, and cultural worker! Hannia is my dance guru🕺🏻I met them at a series of online freestyle dance workshops where they taught us participants the basic mindset and some tips to dance more confidently and comfortably. And that was really a life-changing experience. At first we were shy and didn't really engage, but Hannia didn't push us and instead slowly created sense of community with their joyful personality and empowering words. I still can't forget the beautiful atmosphere of the last workshop, where we made a playlist together and danced to the songs we picked, with each person talking about their memories attached to the song. The workshop let me become comfortable (maybe too comfortable) with dancing in the eyes of other people. I never had a chance to stay in touch with other participants and don’t even know their personal backgrounds, but I'm sure they're dancing away on the dance floor or in the bedroom or kitchen even today with the magic Hannia gave us🪩

This piece begins with Hannia’s poem “I don’t even know you but I see you”, which I feel is resonant with what I witnessed at the workshop. It is followed by a dialogue between Hannia, me, and the photographer Kate, where we’re talking about what it actually means to “see” people, our roles in the community, how fucked up the capitalism is, and the fear and value of being “seen”. Actually what you find in the article is just a tidbit of our unforgettable dialogue—we talked about a whole bunch of things, from cosmic stuff to very personal memories, most of which I had to omit because of the word count limit. Still, I believe it testifies the meaningful “little pocket of community” that we created together in Hannia’s cozy studio inside Chinatown Centre!

Love you Hannia and Kate❤️
