the person i most wanted to be was her. cảm ơn, ma. this is yours as much as it is mine. for as young as i could remember, when days were tough for ma (at the nail salon, spiffs with ba, detailing cars, etc) she’d kneel down, square me to her, and in a gentle but firm voice, remind me: “bé mai, you have school, things get hard for me, for you, for us... but you have your education. make it easier for yourself one day. that is your hope.” her sacrifices, became my why. some days, it felt like shackles and chains, responsibility i didn’t ask for, but owed anyway. as i get older i see that it’s my privilege and honour. a badge. i am living for my people, bloodline, and for those struggle getting to their next day. my existence as a vietnamese woman is political resistance in itself. i am living proof of how colonialism and imperialism breeds violence onto communities, trauma wounds that bleed for generations, and how collective care is the heart of healing. its for youths ive worked for, connected to, and have passed because they didn’t even get the chance due to a plethora of systemic injustices. for the lack of colour and diversity in the field. for when i was 5 in a social workers office, having me and my siblings translate why we were being separated from our parents who didn’t understand what was going on. for ma, who the other day needed to practice spelling “niagara” to make a fb post (lol) recapping our trip from the falls: a woman who doesn’t even have elementary-literacy levels of education, but has found her way. for her entire life as a woman, dedicated to motherhood and nurturing resilience within herself and us. i am not a martyr by all means. all i wish to do is breathe a bit of humanity into places that so badly need it. ma’s beacon of hope was probably me sometimes, but for me, it has always been her. i am so proud to be the first of my lineage to achieve her masters. i am so proud to be vietnamese! i can’t wait to be the person in whom little kate needed. plus i got to wear an ao dai and it’s sooooo pretty 🤍🎓 by @katehamai
⭐️ Favourite photos. They’ve been on my stories. But i really like them. If you asked me about my trip i’ll probably stutter and draw a blank. Tell you about the phenomenal food and sights…really though, what I’d never forget are the people. The mother-tongue moves through memories even before I have them. Can things feel foreign and familiar simultaneously? Thuong in Viet means love. Not romantic love, but unconditional, sacrificial love. Being in Vietnam I finally grasped the gritty layers of the word. How strangers, neighbours, extended family, thuong as if you’re their own. you are. We know of collective communities but nothing compares when you’re actively embedded in it. Participating in it. Plucking apart your individualism and confronting it. How could you not feel intimate, close, and protected, when everyone is uncle, auntie, brother, sister to you? In fact, you’re always something, someone, to another. 1. let’s eat hải sản (seafood) 2. special flowers - expedited delivery 3. spilled rice grains 4. the lads 5. the ladies 6. girl give florists a run for their money 7. ha giang views 8. surprise at a temple 9. the real girl boss Vang Thi Mai textile tycoon and Forbes winner 10. mom on call and on duty by @katehamai

i’ve been listening to a lot of radiohead these days, climbing (usual), being hot (double entendre) and overstimulated (classic), remembering sunscreen application (protected), sleepy, hosting loved ones, and feeling guilty (perpetual procrastination dishes and laundry), losing but finding my sterling silver earrings (adhd), and writing more poetry (inspired) ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡ if you need me i’m still around tho by @katehamai
