English can really be a dry language. Certain things, we really can’t describe in words…. Here’s a list of a few words in Japanese and Arabic that blow our descriptors out of the water. Mind you, even the English translations usually don’t fully match, but you get it.

Asīl (أسيل): The soft, smooth reflection of moonlight or sunlight casting a gentle glow over a calm landscape or smooth surfaces.

Fajr (فجر): The very first, crisp light of dawn that breaks through the darkness of night, often carrying a spiritual connotation of a new beginning.

Rawnaq (رونق): The specific, breathtaking radiance or freshness of a natural scene right after a heavy rain.

Sada (صدا): The lingering echo or reverberation of a sound (like wind or a bird call) passing through an open valley or forest.

__________

Mizukagami (水鏡): Literally “water mirror,” describing a calm body of water that acts as a flawless reflection of the sky or surrounding landscape.

Matsukaze (松風): “pine wind,” the sound of the wind whispering or passing through the needles of pine trees. by @katelyn.clix

Welcome to my rabbit hole into the world of food.

I’ve been diving into sourcing lately, exploring farmers markets, produce stands and restaurant supply stores. Asking strangers on Facebook if I can raid their gardens…

I met Aziz and Ali at a restaurant equipment shop in Cary, who were so kind and helpful while I wandered around like a kid in a candy store. If you love cooking or baking or catering or anything, go there.

I posted in a Wake Forest community group looking for fresh herbs and three different women invited me into their gardens to take what I needed. I’m turning some of them into compound butters to bring back as a thank you.

Then, while welcoming my brother’s new exchange student from Germany, I asked what had surprised her most about America so far.

“The grocery stores. They’re huge.”

Whether that was wow, amazing or what the hell is with all this junk food remains unclear.

But it stuck with me.

Especially with what feels like a new produce recall every five minutes, I’ve been thinking a lot more about how good it feels to know where my food actually came from. Who grew it. Who handled it. Who made it. And how much gets lost when everything gets bigger and farther away from the people behind it.

So I’ve been trying to go the other direction.

Smaller. Closer. Local growers, makers, markets, niche little shops, conversations with strangers. Learning as I go.

Turns out I might love everything around food just as much as I love cooking it.

Anyway, that’s kind of what Kindr Kitchen is becoming.

No grand launch speech. Just making, hopefully, good food, meeting good people, and seeing where it goes. 🌿 taken in Youngsville, North Carolina by @katelyn.clix

Wandered into Cedar Creek Gallery during a glassblowing demonstration and stayed, completely spellbound, fixating on fire, movement, rhythm, urgency…. Everyone working in sync like a choreographed dance, shaping something delicate from something so dangerous.

These photos follow a “throw and blow” process, where a potter throws a mold for the glass, making forms feel a little more organic, a little more alive.

The kind of place that reminds me how much beauty lives in process, and I’m so thankful it exists. taken in Cedar Creek Gallery by @katelyn.clix

Been MIA and out the way since moving to NC. Here’s a proof of life dump.

Got a job I love curating artists and creatives, planing events, and supporting the local community.

Got to coordinate my Aunt’s Wedding in Florida - including making floral arrangments. 💐

Took over my Mom’s garden. Also just been cooking a lot. 😌

Highlight being the massive fort I built to surprise my niece and nephew.

Got to reconnect with some old high school friends and pull up to an incredible show by @teshiam .

Missing all my folks in DC tremendously but finding peace out here and loving that for me as well. 💕 by @katelyn.clix
