Kate Shooter’s approach to painting has always been process driven. A fast conversation between mark and response allowing subconscious narrative to bubble up through the layers. Works often hover in that sweet spot between abstraction and figuration... “I came to the realisation some time ago that all my work is self-portrait. My compulsion to paint is really the need to make the interior exterior, to render as authentically as possible the experience of being human - more specifically me, through paint on surface.”

Kate studied art at Howard Gardens Art School in Cardiff and then Wimbledon School of Art in London, graduating in 1996. Her work is held in private collections worldwide and also several galleries across England and Wales.

Five more artists from What Remains Visible, currently on view at Marshall Arts in Memphis.

This installment features Rob Hall, Kate Shooter, Lisa Williamson, Toby Rainbird, and Jan Sugden. Five painters working across different approaches to abstraction, from dense, physical surfaces and direct gestures to layered color, shifting forms, and more restrained pictorial structures.

Durden and Ray is pleased to present the exhibition, The Shadow Side of Everything an expanding series of painting exhibitions fostering exchange between distinct yet
interconnected painting communities, foregrounding practices that navigate the space between material process, perception, and cultural context.

Building on relationships formed through the earlier iterations of this exhibition, Pt 3 deepens the conversation between artists working across Memphis, New York, London, Yorkshire, and now Los Angeles and beyond. Rather than presenting a singular stylistic thesis, this exhibition emphasizes the productive tensions between approaches. The works on view range from gestural abstraction to structurally driven compositions, reflecting a shared interest in painting as an active, evolving language.

Across these varied practices, the exhibition highlights how contemporary painters negotiate influence, geography, and the conditions of making in a globally connected yet locally grounded art world. The exhibition proposes painting as a site of encounter, where differences in sensibility, training, and context do not resolve into uniformity but instead generate new forms of visual and intellectual exchange. At the core of The Shadow Side of Everything, is its role as an evolving, multi-site platform rather than a single, fixed event. The underpinnings of this project are movement, dialogue, and exchange across borders.

I rarely see diptychs through to completion - one will usually rebelliously wander off into another dimension along the way and leave its sibling behind. Unusually this pair made it across the finish line together and remain buddies I think.

Enjoying the emptying of the frame from left to right; busy/open contrasting natures keeping them satisfyingly tethered.

Anyway… small wins varnishing these two on a Friday morning….

Thanks to @auto___amor for this snapshot of their Vol. 11 show TAXI DRIVER opening @terrace_gallery held last Thursday. Miya and Tom’s initiative is a brilliant one - check it out. Big thanks to @karl_bielik of @terrace_gallery for selecting my work also 🙏🙌.

The show travels to @auto___amor HQ in Seven Oaks from 21st Sept - 4th October with an artist open day on 26th.
