Kate Shooter will be showing these four wonderful new paintings.

Kate Shooter’s approach to painting has always been process driven. A fast conversation between mark and response allowing subconscious narrative to bubble up through the layers. Works often hover in that sweet spot between abstraction and figuration... “I came to the realisation some time ago that all my work is self-portrait. My compulsion to paint is really the need to make the interior exterior, to render as authentically as possible the experience of being human - more specifically me, through paint on surface.”

Kate studied art at Howard Gardens Art School in Cardiff and then Wimbledon School of Art in London, graduating in 1996. Her work is held in private collections worldwide and also several galleries across England and Wales.

Five more artists from What Remains Visible, currently on view at Marshall Arts in Memphis.

This installment features Rob Hall, Kate Shooter, Lisa Williamson, Toby Rainbird, and Jan Sugden. Five painters working across different approaches to abstraction, from dense, physical surfaces and direct gestures to layered color, shifting forms, and more restrained pictorial structures.

Six weeks today, on Saturday 7th November, I'll be opening our final exhibition of 2026, bringing together Irving's Gallery Artists in ALMANAC.

Gwen John @museumwales and Roath Gallery Weekend yesterday

I finally managed to visit the large Gwen John exhibition at the National Museum Cardiff yesterday.
The beautiful, well observed portraits, interiors and lots of cat paintings really draw you in and invite to take your time engaging with them.

We then went on to the Roath Gallery Weekend that is already happening for the third time in this area in East Cardiff.

After a divine basque cheesecake @sibling_cardiff right next to Cardiff Made, we went to just some of the galleries in the area and saw:

A day given over entirely to mark-making. No brief, no client, no outcome to deliver. Just paper, ink, charcoal, and time.

That day at @galleryathome, spent under the gentle guidance of @kateshooter_studio
alongside my dear friend, the artist @rachelsudworthart is part of why this Studio Journal piece came to be. A reminder of how much creative work begins long before the screen, and why staying close to the hand, to other artists, and to the simple act of making, matters.

The word designer has never quite fit. Not because I do not design, but because what I do extends beyond the visual. It is listening, sensing, shaping. The work lives somewhere between strategy and intuition, and the title Creative Designer feels truer to that.
