How do you fit a dome onto three rectangles?

Dr. Sian Proctor and I were both participants in @theportal.iceland artist residency at the Iceland Eclipse Festival. Sian piloted Inspiration4, the first all-civilian space mission, and we got to bring her show Earthlight World: An Astronaut’s Journey into the Sensory Chamber, the immersive media tent we built within the festival. The catch: the show was made for a dome, and we had a rectangular tent, three projectors, and some very unpredictable Icelandic weather ⛈️

Standard 360° unwrapping turned the Earth flat in a lot of shots (not great for a show about seeing Earth from space 😅), so I used Claude Code to build a custom tool. This allowed me to go scene by scene, making every creative call by hand and adding a new editing tool whenever a shot needed one.

Weather delays nearly cost us the side projectors, but it all came together, and screening it for a packed Sensory Chamber was a highlight of the festival.

Huge thanks to @museumofscience, the Charles Hayden Planetarium, @drsianproctor, and all the Portal participants who helped build this space and make this possible 💙 taken in Hellissandur by @katesnyderphd

It’s always so interesting to see mammal vocalizations at such lower frequencies than songbirds, even when they sound so high-pitched. This spectrogram shows the frequency axis on a linear scale, so the fundamental frequencies of most voiced human phonemes would be heavily weighted towards the bottom of the graph between about 100-250Hz. The linear scale is great for showing the range of birdsong, though; Pippin’s song spans about 1000Hz to over 4000Hz. His begging call is lower, closer to the human vocal range.

Even though Bug is so small and her mew sounds so high pitched, it’s only about 1000Hz. 🥹 by @katesnyderphd

One of the coolest things about doing live events has been figuring out that Nick and I have very different styles of VJing using Vibralizer. Nick (gamer that he is) is great at busking with the various controllers we’ve connected to visual modifiers for our Many-Handed VJ installations. In contrast, I prefer to listen to the music, consider the sounds, then layer effects based on where I think the music’s going next, and then I just sit back and enjoy the sonic immersion for a bit. That’s why the spectrogram is my favorite way to do visually striking, but still audio-representative visuals.

Some photos of birds from Iceland back in August…

First, an adult arctic tern feeding a juvenile

Red-throated loon in the pond next to @thefreezerhostel

Common ringed plover spotted on the walk from Rif to Hellissandur

White wagtails

Meadow pipit

Black-tailed godwit (I’m pretty sure)

Black-headed gull

A flock of Arctic terns

Juvenile common murre (hold the dots and swipe to watch it dive)

Follow for more examples of how we’re leveling up the audio-reactive visuals game 🔥

A quick demo of how to layer effects in Vibralizer to create visuals you’ve definitely never seen before 😎

And the coolest part is you don’t need a live DJ to play around with visuals in Vibralizer. It works with any audio source on your computer: Spotify, YouTube, Tidal, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, or just microphone input as shown here. Just search Vibralizer on Steam. taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @katesnyderphd

Highlighting just a few of the other projects from @theportal.iceland, even if I didn’t get the best pics/videos.

Incredible mirror installation piece by @kirstberg - so awesome to see so many people pause and get pulled into this!
Ocean Bones / Wondering Forest by @madeline.fountain - I love how this ended up becoming a view frame for the glacier (on clearer days)
The Portal Within and the Gratitude Tree by @heynikehey - the experience of this as a short meander through the trees and rocks of Tröd felt so special
GroundHus by many, but especially @ishkayah - I wish I had experienced this more fully ❤️‍🩹
Starseed and @puppetopia.is was one of the most intentional and fun kids’ areas I’ve ever seen at a festival - kudos Brien and @amy.cathleen!
Undir Sama Himni — mapped projections within the iconic red-roof Hellissandur church Ingjaldscholskirkja by the talented and awesome @crystalpants77. Amazing work pulling this off on the very last day of the festival!!
I can’t believe I didn’t get any shots of The Pier by @_maxhartmann @made.ya.nook — apparently was too busy marveling at how the space you built drove people to gather and interact. The best people-watching!

Still reintegrating from two of the most incredible weeks of our lives. We were locked in from the start and pushed ourselves far outside our typical comfort zone of audio data, software, and pixels.

The experience, the people, the place… absolute magic. We’re so inspired.

Building at Iceland Eclipse Festival has been more incredible than I could have ever imagined.

It took a dream team (and a lot of gaff tape) to make this happen against the odds and the elements 🌬️🌧️ . So inspired by everyone we had the pleasure of co-creating this with through @theportal.iceland. taken in Hellissandur, Snafellsnes- Og Hnappadalssysla, Iceland by @katesnyderphd

I’m in Iceland!! Leading up to @icelandeclipse, I’m staying next door to a huge Arctic Tern colony with @theportal.iceland. These birds are incredibly aggressive and protective of their breeding sites, but since they just attack the highest part of any intruder, holding a stick on your head is a perfectly effective defense. taken in Ríf by @katesnyderphd

Just a silly little prototype, but there’s potential! More frequency bins (stacks of dominos) and greater dynamic range (taller stacks) would both help… or actually focusing on the stacks instead of my refrigerator. 🎥🧈
