COMBE MARTIN | 1939

“A proud restoration of a historic landmark”

Welcome to Combe Martin, a heritage listed house on the Mornington Peninsula that my husband, Anthony and I, along our five children are the proud custodians of.

Combe Martin is the place we will call home.

After years of meticulous researching, consulting, planning, collaborating and painstakingly designing each element of the interior, the restoration program of this iconic beachfront Arts and Crafts home is finally gaining momentum.

A true test of patience and resilience; ensuring we respect and honour the architecture and history of the home, whilst balancing the challenges of our family being displaced.

I have no doubt, when the last brick has been repointed, the final copper gutter polished, and each and every window restored, we will sit back and say it was worth the wait. However, from where we sit now, we are eager to see her completed, and finally have our family all together where we belong.

The restoration is in the fine and capable hands of @beambuildinggroup and @plume__studio along with my entire KWD team. We are so grateful for all of the support we have received from heritage experts along the way. Every conversation and interaction leading us closer to the end, and indeed, the right decision for this home.

I trust our careful approach to restoration and the interiors we are developing will both please and delight those following along as we breathe new life into Combe Martin.

EL AMOR | Nearing Completion

Our Sorrento project is merely weeks from handover, and we are so excited! Designed for a multigenerational family as a legacy home, it caters for 3 generations during precious family holidays.

El Amor- meaning “my love” or “darling” perfectly reflects the sentiment that underpinned our concept. This home was designed to hold love, foster connection, and create a platform for memory making that will develop over generations.

A place for long summers together, for grandchildren to grow up visiting, and for new family traditions to be created and carried forward in perpetuity.

The design draws on Sorrento’s relaxed coastal character, and elements of inspiration from our client’s travels to Alys Beach, Florida. It is overflowing with warmth, depth, and a quiet sense of romance in every space.

This project has been incredibly special for our team, and we look forward to the keys being handed over to our wonderful clients very soon.

Thank you to the team at Magnus Construction. Your workmanship and stewardship of this project has been remarkable.

Gardens Awakening.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love a garden. I am constantly thinking about the relationship between inside and out, and how the placement of a single tree or a beautiful outlook can completely transform the experience of a room.

We are constantly walking back inside the house, looking through windows and doorways, refining the placement of trees and planting to ensure every outlook feels considered. After all, we spend so much of our time indoors, and I love how a beautiful garden can become part of the interior experience.

Unlike an interior, a garden is never really finished. It grows, settles and evolves with the seasons, becoming more beautiful with time.

Perhaps that is what I love most. We can design every detail, but ultimately nature has the final say.

EVER HOUSE | Completed.

It feels like only yesterday we were standing together on site, surrounded by piles of dirt and an overgrown garden, walking through the home with only the frames up and imagining what each of these spaces would one day become.

And now, here we are.

There is something quite emotional about reaching the end of a project like this. We have watched Ever House evolve from lines on a page and conversations around plans into a home that feels warm, settled and so completely reflective of the family who lives here.

For us, that is where the joy lies.

No two KWD homes are ever intended to be the same. A home should tell the story of the people within it. How they live, what they love, where they gather and the little rituals that make everyday life their own.

Ever House was designed for a young family with three young children, which makes completing it feel even more special. In many ways, the house is finished, but their story here is only just beginning.

There will be birthdays around the table, little feet running through hallways, long afternoons in the garden, family dinners around the kitchen island and countless ordinary moments that, one day, will become the memories they treasure most.

To have played a part in creating the backdrop for all of that is such a privilege.

Ever House feels like a warm hug. This is exactly why we do what we do.

EVER HOUSE | Handover Day

There is so much trust involved in designing someone’s home. You are invited into the way a family lives, what matters to them, what they need from their spaces and, ultimately, how they want their home to feel.

By the time we reach handover, we have made hundreds of decisions together. I love walking through the finished home with our clients and remembering when those details were simply a conversation, a tiny sample on the table, or a line on a drawing that we went backwards and forwards on until it felt just right.

Then you hear, “I love that,” and it makes every one of those decisions worthwhile.

There is something very special about this final walk. No more drawings to mark up or selections to make. Just taking it all in together and seeing the home finally belong to the family it was designed for.

That will always be one of my favourite parts of what I do.

A very special handover at Ever House.

Recently at KWD.

A glimpse into life in and out of the studio. There is so much happening behind the scenes at the moment, and I love seeing projects at every different stage of their story.

Days have been moving between the studio, site visits, time at Combe Martin, emerging projects beginning to take shape and the final details of some very special homes we have recently completed and cannot wait to share.

For me, these moments are such an important part of the design process. Seeing an idea move from materials on the studio table to something you can walk through, touch and experience never loses its magic.

And, as always, it is the details that I find myself coming back to. Beautiful materials, unexpected colour, craftsmanship and those small decisions that give a home its personality.

A little of what we’ve been seeing, making and loving lately at KWD.

Rosserdale taking shape.

A significant milestone on site as the project moves through framing. What has existed for so long in drawings is now beginning to reveal itself in three dimensions, with the scale, proportions and relationship between spaces becoming increasingly clear.

There is something particularly exciting about this stage of a project. The structure is still exposed, but you can already begin to understand how the home will feel and how each space will connect.

A project in progress, and plenty more to come.

Rosserdale, in progress.

A heritage-listed waterfront home, Rosserdale is a project where every design decision is carefully considered in relation to bot the existing architecture and its remarkable position on the water.

This stage is about so much more than structure. It’s when you begin to experience the rhythm of the home, the relationship between spaces, and the sightlines we have considered so carefully throughout the design.

It’s also such a pleasure working alongside incredibly organised builders, whose attention to detail and forward planning make such a difference as the design takes shape on site.

A few moments from our latest site visit, documenting Rosserdale at its most honest and unfinished form.

Spring has a way of influencing how we live at home.

Doors stay open a little longer, light reaches further into the rooms, and the boundaries between inside and out begin to disappear. Considered design anticipates these moments, creating sight-lines, material connections and spaces that allow the garden to feel like a natural extension of the interior.

It’s not simply about bringing the outdoors in. It’s about designing a home that intentionally connects the two.

ON THE DRAWING BOARD

This home draws on the warmth and familiarity of farmhouse living, interpreted through bold material choices, tactile finishes and a more refined approach to detail.

It is warm, confident and full of character. A home where the materials will continue to tell their story as they age, patina and become part of everyday life.

Our vision for Devon Park explores the language of the Contemporary Australian Farmhouse.

Throughout the interiors, we wanted to create a sense of warmth, character and permanence. Natural materials, layered textures and a relaxed approach to colour bring softness to the architecture, creating spaces that feel sophisticated but never precious.

As a holiday home, the way the home is lived in was incredibly important. It needed to accommodate children and grandchildren, family and friends, with generous spaces for everyone to come together alongside quieter places to retreat.

It is this balance that defines Devon Park. A contemporary country home that feels refined yet relaxed, and above all, designed to be lived in and shared.
