My Image “Night Swimming” was Selected for ‘Art as Storytelling’ hosted by @midwestniceart - juried & curated by @alinesmithson. All art mediums were included and that makes it more extraordinary to me that my photography was selected among so many unique accomplished artists! Photography has been the redheaded step child in the art world, at least the art world I experience. So this is indeed a proud moment for me and all photographers to feel included ☺️💕🙏💗🙌

These are sketches, quick works completed for a prompt for a class I am taking, and will be taking a version of this class with a different professor until I graduate in 2029. I chose this idea for the protagonist and antagonist assignment.
💙
My brain became the antagonist in my story because I haven’t always trusted my brain. By combining the brain scans with photographs of myself, my daughter, nature, and memories, I am bringing the evidence of my stroke into the story of my life, and I am the protagonist. Maybe my daughter & nature are also protagonist💕
💙
I layered and merged the brain scans with my self-portrait, lumen prints of flowers and stems, a strawberry, and an image of my daughter as a child wearing my wedding dress. I also experimented with color gradients to alter the images and create different variations. The process allowed me to bring together images connected to my body, memory, motherhood, nature, and the physical evidence of my stroke. taken in Jenkins Fine Arts Center by @kathpace

Weeks before our big move, I took my camera with me on our errands to say goodbye to the places we loved for so many years. 🥹 We scattered Willows 🐶ashes on our special place on our trail. It’s been a lot. This is an especially hard time for my family as our lives are in 3 different cities. My husband joins me full time in November. I can’t wait! This weekend we are staying with family and taking a train to Philadelphia to see Amelia for the very first time living her life in Philly! We are staying with her for 2 nights:) 💕I am so excited to go back home and see her in the place she was born 💕🙌💕

I am learning to play. It’s hard to play in a new space, my mind & body uprooted to a whole new life. I feel grateful to be here. I am getting excited to see the possibilities unfold. I look forward to feeling more connected to my mind & body, and feeling more like myself among all the new people & things. It’s only Tuesday, and it’s been a good week so far. I had an opportunity to meet an artist that I really wanted to meet! We had a lovely conversation, she shared 3 books and some paper with me☺️ I love what she is creating, and I can see that she is inspired by the same work and artists that have inspired me and have been a part of my research. That truly made my day!

Hello! Are you as ready as I am to create a daily practice with making?! Let’s Goooo! If you are over 50 I especially want to hear from you & inspire each other, because I want you to know that you are still relevant and have exciting art to make! If you are under 50 thats not as cool as 57 🤗😜but I still want to hear from you! Tell me what you are passionate about making!

I am taking a class that is designed to help artists generate a daily practice of play and quick making that in time will begin to inform the work and create finish pieces later. The exciting thing is the work is contained in a sketchbook. This is new for me. I have played and worked quickly, and the small works that I’ve created are in boxes and bins. I love the idea of having my practice in a book that I can finish and Refer to! It will help me remember! I feel very lucky to have gotten this specific professor because his ideas and process work very well for my practice & goals.
.
if I continue to share, it’s been recommended by someone really cool that in the Art music scene in Durham:) she thinks I should do TikTok combined with Instagram. I think that’s what she said. Lol. I want to make sharing easy for me. And fun. I want it to be an archive. If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

Today was my 3rd day of classes for the MFA program at ECU. I am living between 2 worlds. No longer belonging to Chapel Hill, and not yet settled in Greenville cuz I am alone in a new place. It’s mentally exhausting. There are a few things I am excited about, but I am mostly overwhelmed and very alone and anxious. It’s difficult to be here without my husband , since he is back in our home as we wait for it to sell. I decorated my little space to help me breathe and feel a sense of normalcy. I used my small prints and two panels of “wall paper” that are wrinkled;) and added my friend @lorivrba business cards to a panel of wood for inspo.💕
.
There is not much time in my schedule to make anything. Hopefully this is just a first semester thang, and in the future, I hope to have a schedule that allows for me to learn & create. 💕

PS. I take a bus to a commuter parking lot and the bus broke down today, just another layer of stress I really didn’t need. 😭😩

Have you ever had ideas that you want to try, but you don’t know how to start? What if it’s a total failure. That’s what I was feeling.
.
I FINALLY DID IT! It feels like a HUGE MILESTONE!
I EVEN DID A VOICE OVER! Haha.
.
I brushed burnt umber India ink across the acetate, playing with transparency and opacity. I layered hand-painted flowers from a vintage black metal tray, light, plants, a favorite graphic painting with text, and an entry from my diary from 1979.
Then I photographed the layers with my iPhone, watching how each new element changed the image. The acetate became a kind of threshold—something that allowed light to pass through while holding onto the photograph, the ink, the plants, the flowers, and the fragments of my own history.
.
The original image was photographed on July 29, 2012 in Strathmere, New Jersey. I was in my third year of learning, digital photography, and photographing families and children. This child was one of the more unique faces I’ve photographed. I love her oval face, large deep set eyes wide flat nose covered in the most adorable freckles! She has an unconventional beauty that transcends time. Children have always been a favorite subject to photograph.

This summer I took Cami Turpin’s class. It’s all about shooting film ( digital is ok too ) and not getting hung up on results. I embraced the process cus “ The process is the point” is the name & purpose of Cami’s class.
.
Since my summer is crazy busy with packing & moving, I wanted to be intentional about carving time out to be creative. I knew I wouldn’t be able to do all the projects and be active all of the days and weeks., but there were five days where I dedicated my time to Cami’s class while staying at a friend’s home while they were away. This wasn’t just any friend’s home. This was my dear friend, who is an exceptional artist, and her home reflects her love of art, Photography, and nature. I plan to share more about that specifically at a later date.
.
I brought a lot of supplies and camera gear that week, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to photograph any humans except for myself. The one thing I brought to photograph was this white horse with a pink sparkly saddle. I chose it because it represents my daughter, coming of age and having to part with all of her childhood things as we move from our home in Chapel Hill. It was away for me to connect to that feeling🥹💕
.
I used my point-and-shoot underwater Fuji camera that I’ve had for 13 years and barely used until two years ago:) it’s now part of my creative practice. Although Cami‘s class was focusing on using 35 mm film, I used everything, because that’s what I do.
.
The beauty of shooting an old digital camera is that I’m able to get effects that are unplanned, look different than a more modern camera. I love the movement and blur I was able to achieve with some of these images. One even looks like a double exposure! I was surprised & moved by this practice, the Toy Horse was speaking to me, it came to life in the water. There’s something about photographing toys and dolls, that gives them life, it’s like the velveteen rabbit the last unicorn all in one.
.

I really enjoy looking at my camera roll daily. It reminds me of the little moments, gestures, just living our lives. One of my goals is to learn how to paint and I think about painting from photographs, simple ones I take with my phone like these. Not necessarily the one of me and my Willow🐶💕 I just threw that in because that was a special day I taught myself to pitch a tent in front of my house, and Willow was “watching”.
☀️
I want to find the in between moments, the awkward pauses, the beauty in the every day. One of my favorite painters is @amy_dury she paints from old photographs. The way she transforms a BW photo to color using acrylics, then oils, and she may even add a stencil, or draw on her canvas. Her style is intuitive yet she has a process that allows for experimentation.
I have been studying her work again, and I found a great artist talk she did on YouTube, I will share.

Many of my resources I find are from the UK 🇬🇧 cuz my husband is British and has a HUGE influence on what we watch and enjoy on the Telly. 💕 Check out @winslowartcenter and Portrait & Landscape Artist of the Year from the UK on streaming services.

I have only tried to paint on canvas 1x, i watched a lesson Amy Dury recorded for the portrait artist of the year, and I made my daughter and husband join me to paint. Other than that, I’ve only watched painters paint, and I’m hoping to make the leap from watching to doing!
