In it to win it. ☄️
I’m just a few weeks out from delivering HOW TO DISAPPEAR to my publisher & I’ve found the flow. Rainy days in the writing loft, time on the trails, & a story that continues to surprise me. I’m wringing out the sponge, keeping only what thrills, scares, or moves me. I think it’s working 😊 taken in Santa Fe, New Mexico by @katiearnold

off & running ! I’m so grateful i got to spend this time settling her in and seeing her launch. P, you got one of the good places and they got the absolute best in you!

We are ridiculously proud and can’t wait to watch you make Midd home. Green mountains, sooo many rivers, maybe just a few more clouds 😉, but creemees galore, new friends, and amazing teammates.

The string’s stretching a little longer to reach from Santa Fe, but don’t forget, home is wherever you can be you. 😊 Just call when you need some green chile! 🌶️😀❤️🩷🩷🩷 by @katiearnold

Today i ran 1100 feet to the summit of Snake Mountain, in remembrance of the hundreds of firefighters who died trying to rescue others in the Twin Towers on 9/11. It’s hard to process that it’s been 25 years. I was not in New York City that day, though I lived there for two years in the mid-90s and grew up in NJ towns that did lose many to the terrorist attacks. I was in Santa Fe on the morning of September 11, and had gotten up early to go for a mountain bike ride before work, my first in a few weeks, following a small medical procedure. I must have left right before the first plane hit the building and by the time I got home, both towers had fallen. I think Steve called me and told me what happened, in disbelief, though I may be misremembering because I’m not sure I had a cell phone then, or if I did if I would have taken it with me. When I got home, I turned on the TV and watched everything I could see to try to understand. It was impossible to understand.

Later or at some point, I must’ve gone to work because I remember being at Outside with my friends and colleagues, all of us wandering around in a daze. New York City had never felt so far away.

Every year on the anniversary, I rewatch the videos, just as I had that morning, trying to piece it together. Trying to comprehend what I had missed, knowing what we didn’t know then: that everything had changed & nothing would ever be the same.

It’s a beautiful day in Vermont, cool and bright and cloudless. I’m thinking about all those who lost their lives, who were brave and fought back, who tried to save others. We will never forget.🇺🇸 taken in Snake Mountain by @katiearnold

Start at the end, end at the beginning: Day 6, the last day of my solo bikepacking trip: Blueberry Hill to Middlebury, 30 miles along forest roads & trails to the Robert Frost Cabin in Ripton. I had to sit for a while and take it in, the long view, the simple building, the solitude, the mountains in the distance, the front porch. oh to be able to live in a cabin like that and write poems!
This was a true journey, ferreting out the back roads and best places, covering ground, teaching my body that it’s safe to let my girl go, here in this place. Reminding myself why I love Vermont: the people and their kindnesses, the mountains and community. Though I didn’t know it when I started, I do now: biking helped me metabolize my sadness that this part of mothering P has ended, and a new one is beginning.
Riding bikes is such a simple and beautiful way to travel. All you have to do is get up in the morning and decide where to go next, just take the hills and valleys as they come. After I finished and picked up the car and had carnitas tacos beside the river and went to the Waybury Inn and rested for a while, I couldn’t help myself – I went out for a ride. 🩷🚲😊

Day 5 VT bike packing, Sunday edition: 63 miles from v posh Woodstock back to Blueberry Hill, over Middlebury Gap. That completes my 4/4 gap tour 😂
App Gap ✅ long but beautiful
Lincoln Gap ✅: shortest and steepest, most swearing but most remote/fun
Brandon Gap ✅: gentlest & very pleasant
Middlebury✅: most beautiful coming into Breadloaf, as the sun was going down.

+ found a class 4 road outside of Pomfret yay and lots of swimming holes on the White River. Took River road instead of route 107 out of Bethel —pro move thx for the tip. 😊

bit o sightseeing on my way out of town at the national park historic site — Marsh Billings Rockefeller estate, including my first-ever “fernery” !

Sweet “homecoming” to Midd and Blueberry Hill💙

Day 4 solo bike-about: Waitsfield to Woodstock. 63 miles and 4500 ft of climbing. This was a good learning day! Lesson no. 1 while i stand by my rule of not booking a hotel until the day of, it was maybe not the wisest choice when riding into fancy-pants Woodstock on Saturday of Labor Day weekend.😊 everything was booked online so I had to resort to the old walk-in trick. Fortunately, I landed in the coolest spot in town and got one of their last rooms! The Village Inn of Woodstock is hip in a very old-fashioned Victorian way and that’s not an oxymoron, and the Vic Tavern downstairs is definitely the coolest vibe for dinner. So lucky me!2: when you don’t have a place to stay, you waste a lot of time along the way Google searching what’s available. And stopping to charge your phone. (in my haste leaving Middlebury, I left my portable charger in the car whoops.) lesson #3 gravel is wayyyy more fun, but a lot slower but still my favorite. When I’m on the road I always feel like I’m just trying to get somewhere. When I’m on the gravel, I’m exploring . 4: stop at the local bike shop for route tips. I got more from my new friend Dylan at the Rochester bike shop than I could’ve gotten on any app. #5 always stop at the creamee window. 6. Woodstock is drowning in cuteness, maybe too much cuteness? 7. One pair of socks is not enough. 🍦💚🚲🩷

Day 3 solo bikepacking ramble: Blueberry Hill to Waitsfield via pretty Brandon Gap. I thought there’d be less climbing but somehow still racked up 5500 ft in 55 miles. the absolute highlight was chancing upon the poet Ruth Stone’s cabin outside Brandon where she lived for 50 years and wrote her poems and raised 3 daughters. I almost rode right past it but circled back when I saw the sign. I’m so glad I did. Her poem “Green apple” pretty much sums it all up. 🍏🩷
Thx to Dylan at Rochester bike shop for the gravel route tips, Quarry Road to Town Line & for teaching me a new phrase for a steep climb: “it walls up.” 😊 it did wall up.
Other highlights: candy at East Warren store, naked babies in a yard, geese, Blueberry Pond, maple creemee, and a pony!
Today south thru the Mad River valley toward Woodstock?
