Sometimes the difference between “this looks fine” and “YES. That’s it.” is ridiculously small.
A tiny shift in skin tone.
Pulling back one distracting color.
Brightening one little area.
Softening something that’s pulling your eye away….

Those are probably my favorite parts of editing because they’re usually not dramatic changes - they’re just intentional ones, and I walk through a LOT of those little finishing touches inside my Editing with Purpose course because they’re such a big part of how I finish an image.

My favorite thing to see is when y’all enroll in one of my courses and then immediately take action. @josiekitchphotography enrolled in my Creating Session Videos course just last week and is already creating videos!! She sent me this DM today:

I want you to know I knew NOTHING about video. I’ve never ever recorded anything on my camera. Your teaching was so easy to understand. And the Final Cut tutorial was so so helpful. I used your LUT too! I was hiring my videographer to come back in November to record Santa content and now she own’t have to because I’ll be able to do it myself!

How I edit with TAP: I use Pro 400H from Green Pack 1. This is my starting point for every outdoor image.

What I adjust depends on what the individual image needs. I never, ever leave an image with just the profile applied.

I’m looking at things like skin tones, color casts, greens, contrast, overall color and visual balance.

Somewhere along the way, we started expecting editing to be instant.

And I think, in doing so, we took a little of the art out of our art.

The details matter. For me, editing has never been about applying a preset and calling it done. It’s a lot of small, intentional decisions that add up to the final image.

I teach my full editing process inside Editing with Purpose.

I feel like I’ve been talking about this forever 😂 (Well it’s been 15 years of talking about it at this point so … if the shoe fits!)

But truly… if you’re a photographer and you’re not offering this with your sessions yet, I really want you to know that you can.

I’ve been adding video to my family sessions for years, and it has become one of my favorite things to deliver to clients.

So yes, I’ll probably keep posting about it until you’re tired of hearing me talk about it. 😂 by @katiebethlamb

I learned pretty quickly that creating beautiful, intentional films takes a lot more than simply flipping your camera into video mode and hitting record.

Over the years, I’ve learned how to create films that feel just as intentional as my photographs and how to do it without turning my sessions into a video production.

That’s what I want to teach you.

PS. These were taken at this year’s @themotherhoodanthology Gathering Retreat which is already sold out for next year! I seriously can’t wait to be back. 🤍 taken in Rosemary Beach, Florida by @katiebethlamb

My brand new editing course is here. 🤍 Editing with Purpose is officially live! (comment EDIT for the link)

We edit through all kinds of real-life scenarios - full sun, cloudy days, water, tricky greens, skin tones, multiple skin tones, etc. I talk you through exactly what I’m seeing and what I’m doing along the way.

The number one question I know I’m going to get: What preset do you use? I edit with @thearchetypeprocess (TAP Profiles), but this course really isn’t about teaching you to edit with one specific preset or profile. Most of what I teach can be applied to whatever you’re already using.

The goal is not for your photos to look exactly like mine. I’m showing you my complete process and exactly how I approach my own images, but the bigger goal is to help you understand YOUR images better, because once you understand color, skin tones, light, what to look for, and how all of those little adjustments work together...
you can make those decisions based on the way YOU want your work to look, and that’s so much more valuable than memorizing my settings.

One thing I knew I wanted to include in my new Editing with Purpose course was more than just my “normal” editing process, because real sessions don’t all happen in the same perfect lighting, with the same colors, in the same environment.

So inside the course, there’s a full core editing module where I walk you through my complete process and the foundation of how I approach every image, but then there’s an entire separate module dedicated to those special editing scenarios that require you to think a little differently.

Things like...
• working with multiple skin tones in the same image
• cloudy/overcast days
• getting greens where you want them
• winter sessions with lots of neutrals
• shooting in full sun
• editing sessions on the water

And instead of just showing you what I do, I explain what I’m seeing in each scenario and why I’m making different decisions, because that’s the part I really want you to learn. The goal isn’t to edit every image the exact same way. It’s to have a solid process you can start with, and then know how to adapt it based on what the image in front of you actually needs.

Okay, so apparently I’ve made it my life’s mission to figure out how to film BTS at sessions. 😂

I’ve tried SO many different gadgets and setups over the years, and after weeding out the ones that were a total flop, I’ve finally landed on the few I actually use.

Having BTS of my sessions has become one of my favorite ways to create content without having to create content.

I just dropped a brand new mini course inside The Motherhood Anthology where I’m sharing exactly what I use, when I use it, and how I turn those little clips into content.

If you’re a motherhood or family photographer and you’re not already inside TMA, this is your sign. 🤍

If you take my Editing with Purpose course and six months from now you can’t remember the exact settings I used on a single image...
I’m completely fine with that. 😂

What I DO want you to remember is how to look at an image and think:
- The skin is too cool.
- There’s a green cast here.
- This area is pulling my eye away.
- The image needs more depth.
- The color feels muddy.
- THIS is what needs to change.

Because once you understand what you’re seeing, you don’t need someone else’s slider numbers.
You know what to do, and that confidence is really what I want you to walk away with!

Nearly 20 years later, adding video to my sessions is still one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for my business.

Not because I wanted to become a videographer. I loved photography, but I realized there were parts of a family’s story that photos simply couldn’t capture - their voices, their movement, and all the little moments happening in between.

But I also learned pretty quickly that creating beautiful, intentional films takes a lot more than simply flipping your camera into video mode and hitting record.

Over the years, I’ve learned how to create films that feel just as intentional as my photographs and how to do it without turning my sessions into a video production.

That’s what I want to teach you.
