Woke up to the most beautiful sunrise, and thought about how damn lucky I am to share a life with Mt. Olympus. 🏔️✨

Every single day, I get to look at her beautiful west side (unless the smog is too bad 🫠). In the winter, we watch our favorite rock that stays golden with light until everything else in the valley fades into dark. In spring, I watch her wake up and become green. In the summer, we watch headlamps scurry up the mountain in the darkness. In autumn, she’s the first place I spot changing leaves, scattered among her hillsides.

On lucky days, we see paragliders flying above her ridgelines, swirling in the thermals. 🪂 When a big storm comes, I can see ski tracks from my kitchen window.

Nearly every day, I watch the magpies commute. 🐦‍⬛ They sleep in Millcreek, then come in to the valley with a sunrise traffic jam for the day. At sunset, they all fly back into the canyon, with a pit stop at my favorite neighbor tree to serenade me with the daily magpie telegram.

Sometimes, we talk about leaving SLC. Going somewhere with bigger pastures and less people—but then we look around, and realize there is literally no where that has it all the way this valley does. To be able to wake up this close to nature, but still be right in the middle of a city? You can’t find it like this anywhere else.

Here’s to another year of running back into the house yelling “BRODY YOU GOTTA COME LOOK OUTSIDE IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL” every single day. 💛

Thanks for the 2023 views from this little urban homestead, Mt. Olympus. We love you. taken in Mount Olympus by @katieboue

RELEASE THE TAPES from the day @brodyleven asked me to be his nature nerd forever while birdwatching in Patagonia. 🥹✨

We’re only 12 days out from the wedding and I was watching this video for the 2935384th time this morning and realized you’ve never seen the full thing!

Please enjoy my joy explosion in the form of tippy taps.

Brody didn’t tell ANYONE what he was doing besides our guide @zapa.pics who helped pull off the surprise and capture the moment.

During a little hike in Torres del Paine National Park, we all gathered for our daily family photo, and were confused when Brody broke formation—but you can see the moment where we all figure it out. 🥰

Best moment of my life, can’t wait to top it soon.

Engagement fit check—bird nerd style:

📚 💬 Today is the day: MY BOOK PRE-ORDER LAUNCHES.

It’s called On Digital Advocacy: Saving the Planet While Preserving Our Humanity — and it’s about how I believe we all have a responsibility to advocate for the earth using the digital tools of our era, but also, how I believe we need to keep our souls in check online too.

Yes, we have to be good to the planet.
But we also have to be good to each other.

If you want to read 156 pages about my journey from van life to the outdoor industry to digital advocacy to burn out to being stalked by obsessive hate-fans to finding peace in my gardens, and everything I learned along the way — head to the link in my bio to pre-order.

When you pre-order from @fulcrumpublishing directly, you’ll get an exclusive “Spaghetti says don’t bust the crust” sticker, and I’ll be signing every copy! ✨ Plus, you’ll get the book before the official publication date.

And since I’m trying to walk the walk on putting advocacy into action and not just words — there’s an accompanying toolkit too! It’s a 53-page workbook with activities, prompts, and an invitation to mark up the pages and get creative + joyous in your advocacy. I’m obsessed.

Y’all, I wrote a book.
And I really, really hope you’ll consider reading it.

More eloquence to come soon once my heart and soul stop short circuiting over the fact that this little kid who wanted to be an author in 1st grade grew up and wrote a damn book.

Hello 38, and thank you for one helluva year 37. Today is my birthday. This was the year I decided I *could* do it all—and I really did my big one.

🐥 Became an aunt and found my entire life’s purpose in one tiny human who is my little twin.

👩🏼‍🌾 Completed my second full season as a vendor at the @central9thmarket farmers market selling my veggies and garden goods (and go follow my little online shop @vecinosmarketplace!!)

⚡️ Worked with @wildernesssociety to activate + fairly pay creators on public lands campaigns from Utah to Minnesota.

🍅 Joined the board of directors for @wasatchcommunitygardens.

💸 Met my longstanding financial goal, in an unhinged + deeply fulfilling career I completely made up as I went along.

🛻 Bought myself a brand new hybrid pick up truck, then slept out under the stars in the desert a few times.

🫛 Finally kept the deer out of my garden long enough to grow peas.

💫 Stopped trying to be anyone other than just myself, as is, quirks and ‘tisms and all. Kinda weird, kinda cool, take it or leave it!

I also did way too much this year, almost tipped back over the edge of burnout, kinda forgot what having fun was for a lil jiffy, and had to really challenge my neurodivergent lizard brain to juggle it all and remember to drink water. But I did it, and pretty damn well (except the drinking water part).

But point is: I *CAN* HAVE IT ALL.

I feel the same way about birthday wishes now that I do about holding my breath through tunnels. I spent 7 years wishing to get married to Brody in every tunnel, and once we did, I started just holding my breath and letting that be space for someone else’s wish—I already got mine.

I feel the same way about looking at my next year of life on this silly little planet. Everything is so damn good, it’d be greedy to ask for anything beyond more of the same.*

So, Universe, let’s do another one just like this. Whatever’s up your sleeve, I’m in.

I love you all for being part of this whacky ride with me. Thank you for seeing and matching my weirdness. The world is better when it’s weird. by @katieboue

Two posts in one day because LOOK AT MY AUTUMNAL TOMATO NAILS. 🍅🌿✨

My babe factor just increased tenfold thanks to @strawberry.shortkait.nails.

I’ve never gotten Hot Girl Nails ™️ before, but I was ~influenced~ by @kylierae32’s gorgeous spooky nails at a political event (lol) so I booked an appt at @wicked.west.nails for a lil birthday treat, and tell me how I found a nail artist who is:

✔️ a fellow libra
✔️ who loves Dr. Peppers
✔️ and watches Gilmore Girls

Immediately trust her with my life. I said “I love you,” at the end of my appointment. Gonna have to learn how to do these cutie nail transition videos because I am officially a NAIL GURL now.

What do a reality tv housewife, an outdoor advocate, and a US Congressional candidate have in common?

We’re all waiting for YOU to vote in the midterms. 🗳️

And we’re all deeply in love with Utah.
And at least two of us are highly invested in the art of gossip.
But only one of us is running for Congress (and it’s not @whitneywildrose).

I’m casting my ballot for @benmcadamsforcongress this election as an act of investing in my state’s, and my country’s, future. You’ve got two choices folks, and I’m voting for the guy who earned the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters. It’s a no brainer.

Here’s the thing about voting: I do not elect idols, and I do not place politicians on pedestals. (That’s weird, guys.) Does Ben perfectly align with my personal political agenda? Honestly, no—but no elected leader does or ever has. That’s not what I’m looking for when I vote.

I’m seeking the candidate who closest aligns with my values, and who offers me a seat at their table. I vote for the person who demonstrates a willingness to listen to their constituents, a commitment to decency and the rule of law, and after over a decade of working with lawmakers on outdoor policy issues, I’m voting for the person most likely to tell me the hard truths to my face too.

This November, there is no question who I am voting for—and not just because he is willing to film silly little content with a reality TV star and an urban homesteader. I’m voting for Ben McAdams because he went down to Boulder, Utah, took time to speak with my friend @blake_spalding, and told her he would act to protect Grand Staircase Escalante. I’m voting for Ben McAdams because he made a promise to my friend, and I can’t wait to hold him accountable to making it happen.

Can’t think of anything spookier than seeing the landscapes in Bears Ears and Grand Staircase that are no longer protected and now under threat. 😭

Every landscape pictured has been removed from the monument boundaries. (Ironically, except that rock I’m face down on.)

Our public lands belong in public hands.
Public lands hold our future, present, and past.
They are not for sale.
And we must not let them be sold out.

Let’s just look at the numbers folks, the communities out West have spoken loud and clear about how we feel:

🔶 91% of Western voters say existing national monument designations should be left in place.

🔶 74% of Western voters oppose selling some national public lands for oil and gas development.

Our public lands are our common ground—and they are not for sale. Join me and @wildernesssociety in telling the Department of Interior: Public lands are not for sale! taken in Utah by @katieboue

📍 snapshots from my favorite work trip of all time.

After two summers spent fighting to protect Utah’s national monuments with my colleagues at @wildernesssociety, wrapping this season by taking creators down to visit these landscapes and witness ‘em with our own eyes was the most joyous and heartbreaking gift.

To hear about these places and why they matter is one thing—but to go down there, and BE amongst the rocks and the birds and the wildflowers and the lizards and the cryptobiotic soil, it’s a different type of impact. I would do anything for this land.

I’ve been to all these places before, but coming back through the lens of seeing these once-protected places now removed from monument boundaries was a new gut punch.

While planning this trip, I had to toil over before/after boundary maps, because the TWS team sent us to specifically visit places that were no longer protected.

Turns out, nearly every single one of my ‘saved pins’ collection of places I’ve camped, loved to hike, wanted to visit again—were all now outside of protected boundaries.

This trip was easy to organize, because all of these places I love are under attack. 🫠

Y’all I am so tired, I am so so so so so tired—and I know that everyone else is too. But after witnessing what’s at stake, remembering why I fight for these places, and filling my soul + belly up with other humans who care—I’m more committed to this advocacy than ever.

More to come from this trip, I haven’t even shared the stories from getting to send creators into a tiny airplane over Bears Ears yet! taken in Utah by @katieboue

Had to take this sticker designed by @sarahbethtimmons for @wildernesssociety out on a field trip to the landscape that inspired it. 🌞

Public lands are NOT for sale.

Public lands are for stewardship.
Public lands are for joy.
Public lands are for respect.
Public lands are for peace.

As my friends at @wildernesssociety say: “Hand ‘em down, not over.”

PS: I know everyone is going to ask because they’re so cute—these stickers are not for sale 😭 they were designed by Sarah for NY Climate Week! taken in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by @katieboue

Just a lil road trip to Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monuments to see the public lands our president doesn’t think are worth protecting. 🙃

On July 13, the president reduced the monuments by more than 90%, more than 3 million acres.

It leaves the landscape vulnerable to mining, oil and gas drilling and looting and vandalism of fossils and archaeological sites.

Bears Ears was reduced from 1.36 million acres to ~121,100 acres.

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument was reduced from 1.87 million acres to ~181,500 acres.

Disrespectfully, hell no.

So I teamed up with @wildernesssociety to road trip down to the monuments with a group of creators to see the boundary reductions for ourselves, talk to local business owners and residents, and spend time in these precious landscapes.

I’ll be sharing more from our trip all week, and go follow the crew for their perspectives too:

🦎 @carolinegleich, althete + activist
🌼 @zachcoury, botanist
🎨 @jitterbug_art, artist
🌾 @blake_spalding, owner of @hellsbackbonegrill

And special shout out to @charlieluke, the Utah State Director for TWS who was an absolute trooper amongst the creators (he was 5 feet away from my car when I filmed that last screaming clip, probably a career first hahaha) and is now an honorary influencer too. 💅🏼 taken in Utah by @katieboue

Live footage of my heart breaking at the edge of the “new” boundaries of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

Standing at this overlook I’ve stopped at so many times before, hitting the “limit” of what landscapes this administration finds worthy of protecting, seeing the huge expanse of land removed from the monument boundaries—it hit me like a brick to the face.

Everything you see past the painted hills I’m standing on, is no longer within monument protections. How? Did they even see this before they redrew the lines? How could you be here and not see and feel what I feel?

We’re down here on a road trip to tell the story of these places, and why they matter, and to show you what’s been removed from protections, but also, this trip was for me.

I needed to witness my beloved desert, and see with fresh eyes what has been removed.

On the drive down to our campsite, to a pin I’ve had saved for years and always come back to, I found myself grateful for the dust of cloud kicked up behind my truck—because I needed a little privacy to weep.

This place is special.
This place is sacred.
This place deserves protections.

And I, and I know YOU, will do whatever it takes to restore protections for this place, and for all the public lands across the US under attack right now.
