October Wrap Up Well, didn't October just fly by? There's only two months of the year left, and I'm starting to plan the books i want to read before the end of the year. October was a fun month, and full of fantastic books. With four five star reads it's been my best reading month of the year, and it was almost impossible to pick a favourite, but Kindred just about won the top spot. Do you plan your reading in advance, or are you more of a mood reader? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kindred by Octavia E Butler Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward The Reformatory by Tananarive Due The Corruption of Holis Brown by K Ancrum ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 Razorblade Tears by S.A Cosby ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Oathbound by Tracy Deonn This Wicked Fate by Kalynn Bayron Non Fiction The New Jim Crow by Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colourblindness #readingwrapup #bookcommunity #bookworm #bookstagram #bookblog by @katiechasingchapters
🎃 What This Week 🎃 As we're nearing the end of the month, I thought I'd share a little of what I'm reading, watching and listening to this week. Reading I'm reading Kindred by Octavia E Butler and The Corruption of Holis Brown by K Ancrum. Kindred is a book I've wanted to read for a few years now, and even though I'm only 40% in i already feel like it's going to be a five star read for me. The Corruption of Holis Brown sounded like a perfect Spooky Season read as it's about a teenage boy being possessed. This is the second book I've read by Ancrum, and i adore the way she writes. Watching I'm very much in a scary and spooky mood with what I'm watching right now, though I haven't watched as many horror films as I normally do this time of year. This week I've rewatched Gremlins, Saw and Us. The doppelganger's in Us are so unsettling! The first three episodes of Yaga are released in the UK on Saturday, so I'm hoping to binge those on Sunday! Listening I haven't listened to any audiobooks this month, and i haven't actually been listening to much music either. The one artist I have been listening to quite a lot of is Hozier. I could honestly never get tired of his music. #whatthisweek #currentlyreadi̇ng #bookcommunity #bookstagramuk #readersofinstagram by @katiechasingchapters
Birthday Book Haul It was my birthday on the 6th, and i turned 32. A little older yes, but wiser? I suppose we'll see about that. I would have shared these sooner but I spent a couple of days feeling really drained and run down, which is rather typical for me. But I'm just grateful it held off until after my birthday, as I've spent quite a few special occasions unwell over the years. I received some brilliant gifts including this lovely stack of books. I'm endlessly grateful for the people in my life who care for me, know me and send such incredible kindness and love my way all through the year. Is there a book you think would make a great gift for somone? 📚 The Bones Beneath my Skin by TJ Klune. This has pretty sprayed edges! 📚 The Murder at Workd's End by Ross Montgomery. I love a murder mystery and cosy crime, so this sounds a great fit. 📚 Careless People by Sarah Wynn Williams. This is a book i requested, as I've seen such intriguing and interesting things about it lately. 📚 I received a set of the first five books in the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny. I read the first book, Still Life, about four years ago and really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to getting back into this series. 📚 The Balad of Songbirds and Snakes and Sunrise on the Reaping. I haven't read either of the Hunger Games prequels before, and I'm so excited about both of them! And this edition of Songbirds and Snakes matches my copies of the main trilogy! #bookhaul #newbooks #bookstagram #bookcommunity #bookworm by @katiechasingchapters
September Wrap Up Hello October, my favourite month of the year! It's autumnal, my birthday is on the 6th and I love all things spooky and scary, so this is very much my month. My favourite book from September was undoubtedly Blood Over Bright Haven, is was utterly incredible and if it's not in my Top 10 of the year I'll be appalled. I'm excited to be doing two reading challenges this month. It's my third year (I think) of taking part in This Witch Reads challenge, and this time I'm of the Elemental Coven. I'm also doing my own Black History Month reading challenge, and you can find templates for that on my page. I'll only be reading books by black authors all October, and there's so many books I'm excited for! What book would you recommend for this time of year? 🎃 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L Wang Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (reread) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 The Ballad of Ronan Mccoy by Colin Morgan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 The Dream Thieves Graphic Novel by Maggie Stiefvater Heartstopper Volume 6 by Alice Oseman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 Serenity Falls by CJ Tudor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Clash of Kings by George R.R Martin ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 Daggerbound by T Kingfisher Hemlock and Silver by T Kingfisher ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Villette by Charlotte Bronte Non Fiction How to Sell a Genocide: The Media's Complicity in the Destruction of Gaza by Adam H Johnson #readingwrapup #bookstagramuk #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #bookblog by @katiechasingchapters
How to Sell a Genocide: The Media's Complicity in the Destruction of Gaza by Adam H Johnson On this Mindful Monday I wanted to share a few thoughts on How to Sell a Genocide. In times like these i think it's incredibly important to be aware of the media we consume and believe, and how much of the news and media industry is biased. Those of us who have been following the genocide in Occupied Palestine and the media reaction to said genocide will already know that the media reaction has been overwhelmingly biased, Pro Zionist and racist towards the Palestinian people. How to Sell a Genocide looks at the complicity of the US media in condoning, supporting, and even encouraging, the violence, mass death and destruction across Gaza. Even though i have seen the media's apalling response myself, it was still infuriating to read about in such detail. Whether it was sharing Israeli propaganda unquestioned and without fact checking, upholding Zionist views or starting the narrative only on October 7th, the media was blatant in their explicit bias. The Palestinian people on the other hand, were given no where near the same consideration or respect in their reporting. From the beginning, they were dehumanised, doubted and judged even as we watched them die on our screens. It didn't and doesn't suprise me to learn that many media and news companies are ran and owned by Zionists, because I have seen their beliefs abd biases trickle down and affect what we, as the consumer, are allowed to see, learn and trust. Thankfully there are those that speak out and speak up, no matter the consequences to themselves. Because free speech and the truth are invaluable and they should not be allowed to be silenced, or bought for the right price. #nonfiction #bookreview #bookworm #freepalestine🇵🇸 #bookcommunity by @katiechasingchapters
Friday Flatlay: Christie Edition Every year as we settle into autumn, I find myself drawn towards a particular few genres. Of course I enjoy a creepy horror or an intense thriller, but I also finding myself craving cosy crime. Perhaps it's the start of darker days and the comfort of curling up in front of the fire as rain falls outside, but I always come back to cosy crime this time of year. And of course, if I'm talking about cosy crime and crime in general, I have to highlight the Queen of Crime herself Agatha Christie. The British Library in London will be hosting an exhibition called Agatha Christie: A World of Mystery from the 30th October, with many libraries across the UK also having their own displays on show. Many of the authors personal belongings will will on display including her typewriter, notes for her projects and photographs from her travels. Is there a certain genre of book you enjoy reading at this time of year? by @katiechasingchapters
August Wrap Up Hello September, and hello to the start of my favourite season! I'm so looking forward to seeing nature change over the the next month, and honestly, I'll be happy for the weather to be a bit milder. My August reading was quite eclectic, and full of rereads, library loans, ebooks and audiobooks, so even though i read ten books, i only knocked five off my physical tbr. I read four five star books, all very different but all incredible and one of those five star reads is the start of a long series I'm really excited for! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (reread) The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 Heartstopper Volume 5 by Alice Oseman (reread) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig Vera Wong's Guide to Snooping (On a Dead Man) by Jesse Sutanto The Crucifix Killer by Chris Carter (reread) ⭐️⭐️⭐️ HappyHead by Josh Silver ⭐️⭐️ A Broken Blade by Melissa Blair Is there a book you want to read before the end of the year? #augustwrapup #readersofinstagram #readingwrapup #booklover #bookstagram by @katiechasingchapters
A Broken Blade by Melissa Blair ⭐️⭐️/5 I started A Broken Blade eager, anticipating that it would be my ideal fantasy book. A flawed, queer protagonist, an oppressed class rising up against their colonialist rulers, an enemies to lovers romance, and written by an indigenous author? It all sounded incredible, but unfortunately, I found it lackluster and bland from start to finish. A Broken Blade felt like it had fallen from the Cliche Fantasy Book tree, and managed to hit nearly every branch on the way down. FMC turns out to have secret abilities she never knew she had, FMC falls for the man she's been sent to kill, Shock Identity Reveal! (which was anything but shocking, I actually figured it out in chapter two or three), it was all in there. Perhaps this is a consequence of becoming a more experienced reader, that what was once original and exciting is now overdone and predictable, but I could have accepted the clichés and the predictability if the characters, the plot, and the world building, hadn't felt so hollow and underdeveloped. #bookreview #bookworm #bookstagram #readersofinstagram ##bookblog by @katiechasingchapters
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was groundbreaking and unsurprisingly controversial upon it's release in 1848, and in many aspects, i feel like it's themes and ideas are just as valuable and important today. The story depicts a woman's struggle for financial independence and freedom, her escape from an abusive marriage, and the plight and malicious rumours she has to contend with as she begins a new life. Helen was an incredible character, a true heroine and i rooted for her and suffered with her in equal measure. Wildfell Hall was released in an era when everything a woman had or was depended on the good will of her husband or male relative, and often simply being unmarried made a woman or girl an unwanted burden upon her family, so i think Anne Bronte was incredibly bold and brave to release this story, even if it was under a pseudonym at the time. I personally feel that for a book nearly two hundred years old, it felt more feminist in it's nature and it's story then many supposedly feminist literature released today. It's a hard hitting story that discusses difficult topics such as spousal abuse and substance abuse, but it's also deeply compassionate and witty and with it's simple, straightforward prose I think it would be a wonderful choice fir somone intimidated or unfamiliar with classics. #classicliterature #bookreview #bookrec #booklover #readmorebooks by @katiechasingchapters
📚 Book Haul 📚 I only bought one book in July, but i suspected that restraint wasn't going to continue into August. And, shockingly, I was right 😏 I picked up these three books when I went into the city recently, and it was lovely to wander among the shelves and floors of books on a warm afternoon. 📚 The first book on my list was Small Boat by Vincent Delecroix. This book somehow slipped under the radar for me, so I'm so glad Lisa @numberslady_reads shared it on her page for Workd Refugee Day. 📚 The Mercy Step by Marcia Hutchinson was shortlisted for the Women's Prize this year, and I've seen nothing but wonderful reviews for it. I particularly remember Gemma @books.with.boo reviewing the full longlist and saying that The Mercy Step was her favourite amongst them. 📚 I know there's been quite a frenzy about reading The Odyssey since Nolan's adaptation, particularly Emily Wilson's translation, but truly i have no great urge to read it or watch the film. The Iliad though, intrigues me a great deal so I decided to buy Wilson's translated edition of that instead. What was the last book you purchased? #bookhaul #newbooks #bookcommunity #bookworm #bookstagramuk by @katiechasingchapters
Two for Tuesday Two of the prompts for the 52 Book Club Challenge are to read two books by authors related to each other, and i knew this was the perfect time to explore more books written by the Bronte sisters. Up until now, I've read Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, so i had a few options to choose from out of their collective bibliography. I decided on The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which I'm currently reading, and Villette, which I'll read in September. I went in to Wildfell Hall quite blind, but I'm very much enjoying it and I can understand why it was viewed as controversial upon its release in 1848. Do you find reading challenges help you explore different books or genres you may have neglected? #twofortuesday #classicliterature #bookworm #bookstagram ##booksofinstagram by @katiechasingchapters
🌻 July Wrap Up 🌻 Hello August, how the hell did you get here so quickly! July was a fun month for me, over excessive hot weather aside. I got to enjoy some lovely time to myself, I'm getting more confident in my driving lessons (which is amazing as an anxious person) and my reading generally really enjoyable. I've got quite a few books planned for this month, but I also feel like August might be a bit of a mood reading month, so I could end up reading different books entirely 😄 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Aa Long As The Lemon Tree Grows by Zoulfah Katouh ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 Prince of the Sorrows by Kellen Graves The Two Roberts by Damian Barr ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Murder at Gulls Nest by Jess Kidd Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 The Sirens by Emila Hart Non Fiction The Young Alexander:The Making of Alexander the Great What was your favourite book of July? Would you recommend it to me? #readingwrapup #bookcommunity #bookstagramuk #bookrecommendations #booklover by @katiechasingchapters
