Prayers…. AND Preparation!!!I’m so happy!!! I’ve got caterpillars!!I’ve been growing dill since May anticipating their arrival, and I was nervous that they wouldn’t come… but looking back at my old pictures, I don’t know why. It seems like they always arrive in August, so technically, these (Swallowtail) are early!I think I was worried they wouldn’t come because things have been “off” in my backyard this year, including practically zero zinnias in a space where they had grown so abundantly. The same groundhog that ate a lot of my zinnias this year (but that wasn’t the only factor in the lackluster crop), ate all my dill the year before. So this year, I meant business and built a large cage around the dill. (I’m thinking I’ll do the same with the zinnias next year.)But all of the hard work paid off.A couple days ago I made a “Katie List” of things I love, care about, want to make time for, and one of the things on that list?!✅ Caterpillars!! Please, Universe!!I have been praying for these. Not just because I love attracting them to my backyard with their favorite foods (dill for Swallowtail, milkweed for Monarchs). Not just because I love protecting them from becoming bird snacks in my butterfly house. Not just because witnessing their metamorphosis every year inspires my own evolution. But because their presence is a critical aspect to our ecosystem, and they are in danger.Helping them grow safely to adulthood helps the species continue on, and it brings me enormous joy to play a role in something so much larger (and smaller) than myself.“Katie List” for the W. It’s officially caterpillar season, y’all, and you’re going to hear about it. 💙😹🦋🐛 by @katiehc

🔥Heading into the weekend with a new publication HOT off the presses! 🔥My most recent article for Police1 called “What the Outdoors Can Teach Officers About Stress, Resiliency and Awareness” just dropped! This is an article that draws on so many areas of my life: teaching at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, organizing Peer Support, and, of course, spending A LOT of time in nature.None of these things are separate from each other, but interwoven—just as human beings have been interwoven with the natural world around us since the dawn of humanity. But sometimes, with all of our modern conveniences, we forget how important it is for our well-being to get outside—and how much there is for us to learn from being outdoors.Even though it is HOT AF this weekend, I’ll still be spending time outside, and I hope this article motivates you to make some outdoor plans, too.LINK IN PROFILE! by @katiehc

Who rewired a lamp today?! This girl!! But it’s not just any lamp. It was my Grandma Helen Louise’s lamp. She died suddenly about six months after I was born, so I only know her through stories. The story behind this lamp, which has been sitting in my basement for many years, is that once their five kids (including my Mom) were grown, this lamp was my Grandma’s first “splurge”. Setting decades of practicality aside, she finally had the chance to go, “I want that one” and take it home. While I didn’t know my Grandma (though we share a name… my middle name is Helen), we clearly have a love of flowers and butterflies in common.I’ve been a little sad this summer because my zinnias, the same ones that won the top prize at the Indiana State Fair last year, aren’t doing too well. I’m learning from them and planning for the future, but they won’t fill every indoor vase like they used to, and I’ll have to be much more conscious about distributing them or the seeds. My preference, of course, would be to share in abundance.Nor have I gotten any caterpillars this year, mostly, I think, due to the weather pattern and all this rain. I have so much dill and milkweed just waiting for them.So this lamp, with a new shade I’m not totally in love with but will do for now, is a bit of a balm.Another story about my grandma, that comes from our extensive family history, mostly compiled by my Aunt Bev, was that my Grandma, who came from a more comfortable family than my Grandpa Lou, her mother didn’t really understand why she would choose such a hard life. Farm life with five kids? It definitely seems like a lot… especially for this single woman, who pretty much gets to do whatever she wants and has a whole basement to store such treasures. But I’ve certainly taken the hard road more times than I can count. Why would we do that? Faith, I think. That the life that is meant for us is meant to be purposeful, and I have to question whether you can truly live in your purpose without sometimes choosing challenge.Anyway, I also love where this lamp lives, right next to my Dad’s record player. ❤️ by @katiehc

I taught yoga two times by 11 a.m. this morning: first to 132 cadets at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, then to 22 female inmates in the Adult Detention Center.I’ve been teaching yoga at the Academy pretty consistently since 2020. Over time, what started as yoga grew to include breathwork, mindfulness, then the Officer Wellness lecture, and eventually I took over the Critical Incidents lecture, too.I had previously taught yoga in the Jail, but it’s been on pause for a few years. But my MCSO colleagues asked me to consider bringing it back. This time, inside the block, and not the separate programs room.Do I even need to tell you that both classes went awesome? :)I think EVERYONE deserves to understand how their nervous systems work in processing stress and trauma, and everyone deserves easy-to-access tools to help shift themselves from “fight and flight” into “rest and digest.”There are things I really enjoy about working with inmates, though, and it’s similar to what I enjoy about working with public safety. It’s easy to spend most of your time around people who look like you, think like you, and have similar experiences... to live in a bubble. And I don’t want to live in a bubble. The Academy and the Jail couldn’t be more different places. But once we start talking about stress, trauma, sleep, anxiety, and the nervous system, the conversations afterward really aren’t that different. by @katiehc

Yay! I’m so excited for this! Love working with my dear friends at @indylocal416, collaborating with my friend @brandondreiman, and for an opportunity to serve the greater public safety community in Indianapolis. This class is open to ALL public safety personnel, so if you’ve been interested in beginning or returning to a yoga practice, there couldn’t be a better place to start. ❤️🚒🚓🙏 by @katiehc

My take? What would we expect from a person who never does what they say they are going to do and always blames other people for their problems?I see nothing but opportunity ahead for people who are willing to work hard, do the right thing, earn trust and take nothing for granted.Nothing in life is guaranteed. No one said it was going to be easy. No one is coming to save you.Hustle on, hustlers! by @katiehc

I’ve been working on this article for Police Chief Magazine for SUCH a long time! The seed was planted in April of 2025, the first draft was submitted in November of 2025, and then today — PUBLISHED!While the content is definitely geared toward a specific audience — law enforcement officers and agency heads across the country (and even across the world) who are working with limited budgets and limited access to mental health resources while asking what they can do to make a difference in the lives of their fellow officers — I think the themes are much broader than policing alone. At the heart of this article is grassroots wellness, resistance to solving systemic issues in silos, the empowerment of an officer — regardless of rank or location — to make a difference, and the reduction of isolation through community building.I’m very proud of it. ❤🌊 LINK IN BIO 🚢 by @katiehc
