A storied Houston landmark steps gracefully into a new chapter. ✨

Built in 1926 and designed by celebrated architect Ralph Adams Cram, this Spanish Revival grande dame in River Oaks feels more like a Mediterranean escape than a Texas residence. Architect Ryan Gordon and designer Katie Scott approached its renovation with a reverence for the past—preserving original tilework, carved arches, iron details, and timeworn finishes while introducing thoughtful updates for modern living.

From the jewel-box turquoise bar and richly patterned wallpapers to a sun-drenched fountain room and beautifully refreshed kitchen, every space honors the home’s history without feeling frozen in time.

“It does not need to be overdecorated,” Scott says. “You want the outstanding architecture and detailing to take the starring role.”

Among the Menil Collection’s holdings of Byzantine icons is the painting “Ascension,” which depicts Christ seated in a mandorla and supported by angels. Directly below him stands Mary with her face and hands raised, flanked by two groups of Christ’s faithful disciples gazing and gesturing toward heaven.

The Menil’s collection of Byzantine, Post-Byzantine, and Russian icons—widely regarded by scholars as one of the most important in the United States—embodies the aesthetic and spiritual values that guided John and Dominique de Menil throughout their lives as collectors.

🎨 “Ascension” (detail), ca. 1300–1320. Tempera and gold leaf on wood, 16 × 11 1/4 × 1 in. (40.6 × 28.6 × 2.5 cm). The Menil Collection, Houston. Photo: Paul Hester

A study made for tranquility 🩵

I wanted to make this home office more than just an “office” so we incorporated a lounge into the room by creating minimalistic built ins across the back wall for storage and electronics, located a decorative desk for a pretty visual, commissioned art for personal inspiration and comfortable lounge chairs for relaxing under sculptured lighting. by @katiescottdesign

Simply chic. A project we did that is clean and minimal without being cold and sterile. Keeping things colorful. Wishing everyone a beautiful long weekend! 💛 by @katiescottdesign

The difference paint, hardware & new countertops can make. Swipe to see the before. A kitchen made to feel like a room, a signature Katie staple 🤍

🤍 Designer tip! I love using @thompsonhanson terracotta pots & outdoor plants as decor. A simple way to bring the outdoors inside, and add life + warmth into the home by @katiescottdesign
