A storied Houston landmark steps gracefully into a new chapter. ✨

Built in 1926 and designed by celebrated architect Ralph Adams Cram, this Spanish Revival grande dame in River Oaks feels more like a Mediterranean escape than a Texas residence. Architect Ryan Gordon and designer Katie Scott approached its renovation with a reverence for the past—preserving original tilework, carved arches, iron details, and timeworn finishes while introducing thoughtful updates for modern living.

From the jewel-box turquoise bar and richly patterned wallpapers to a sun-drenched fountain room and beautifully refreshed kitchen, every space honors the home’s history without feeling frozen in time.

“It does not need to be overdecorated,” Scott says. “You want the outstanding architecture and detailing to take the starring role.”

Bathroom decor. As many of my loyal followers know, I’m in the thick of bathroom renovations within my home which started on the 6 July. Yes a long time where I still don’t have one final and completed bathroom as yet. I’m remaining positive that both bathrooms will be completed by Christmas in time for family to visit for the festive season. Patience, vision and optimism keeps my dreams alive that two beautiful and stylish bathrooms await. Decisions of decor selections have been made months ahead but where my lighting options have caused me the most angst. My first and most finalised bathroom has seen an overhead light sourced from @mondoluce_lighting and the ‘Litchfield’ sconces from @platforminteriorsau installed. This small powder room by @katiescottdesign is so inspirational and impactful demonstrating how when wallpaper is installed such as this featured tapestry one by @lamaisonpierrefrey an outstanding and inspirational element is ensued ensuring that this room is very memorable and desirable. #bathroomdesign #wallpaper #wallpaperdecor #wallpapers #bathroom

Scaling up: At @ceramicabardelli tulips are exploded in the TULI ceramic tile collection by Dutch floral designer @ronaldvanderhilst . TULI-Piqué is a dreamy imaginary botanical landscape that merges intertwining tulips and water lilies. TULI-Poni adds a graphic language with stripes and veining plus raised lines achieved through digital printing. And the black-and-white TULI-Charme is more structured, stylized, an architectural motif engraved into the ceramic. The collection is available in 60 x 120 cm format. Wallpaper looks still are popular in ceramic tile decor, as we saw @cersaie in Bologna. A visit to @hermes flagship store on Bond Street in London was a joyful walk through with big blooms, handpainted on the walls by artist @katiescottdesign . Scott also added to collectors’ delight with the Precious Paradise Birkins, handpainted embroidered creations with her floral art work. In Milan and recently Paris, her 34-piece Nature Marine tableware debuted.

Sometimes less is more. But right now, more is definitely more.

From sweeping landscapes to antique-inspired tapestries and hand-painted botanicals, designers are using murals to transform walls into works of art.

The mural styles showing up everywhere right now:

• Scenic landscapes – dense woodlands, misty forests and sweeping pastoral scenes

• Moody botanicals – rich greens, charcoals and jewel tones that create an intimate, layered feel

• Antique tapestry-inspired murals – romantic landscapes and vintage motifs that bring history and character to a space

Today's mural trend goes far beyond traditional wallpaper. Designers are using murals in a variety of ways—from framed mural-inspired artwork and tapestry panels to full-wall landscapes, botanical wallpapers and hand-painted finishes that transform an entire room.

Save this post for inspiration—and follow @houseofcomposition for Part 2, where I'll share mural-inspired art, wallpaper and affordable ways to bring the look home.

A room within a room

Designed to feel transported from the everyday, smaller rooms allow decorative detail to feel immersive rather than overwhelming, transformed through atmosphere, layering, and visual storytelling. Character and mood become inseparable from structural components.

That same sensibility feels alive here.

Soft lighting from the wall sconces creates pools of warmth against the darker palette, while aged brass and the rich warmth of the frame reinforce the layered, collected character of the space. Even the stone basin introduces contrast, grounding the richness of the walls through weight and natural texture.

The effect is immersive, theatrical, and deeply luxurious. There is whimsy here too, and playfulness.

Dramatic, but deeply inviting, the oversized landscape mural transforms the smallest room in the home into something transportive, recalling the decorative interiors of historic European townhouses and grand hotels, where powder rooms were often treated as jewel boxes, unexpected moments of drama hidden within the architecture of the home.

The room never feels excessive. The restrained palette of moss, tobacco, olive, and muted gold keeps the atmosphere cohesive and deeply calming despite the visual richness.

This approach to interiors reflects the Thomas & Hurley philosophy, collections and spaces designed to feel immersive, collected, and deeply personal.
