For our final Pride Month feature, Kat Spencer Assoc ACO discusses working on LGBTQ+ stories for screen.

Project: Black Doves
B Camera Operator: Kat Spencer Assoc ACO @katkamera

“The quality of representation in Black Doves is very highly regarded. It presents a rich world of authentic and diverse characters from different backgrounds, walks of life and the LGBTQ+ community.

Sam (Ben Whishaw) is an anti-hero assassin who happens to be gay. His story centres on an ex-partner (Omari Douglas) and we are drawn into a beautiful yet complex love story as he comes out of exile to protect his best friend, an undercover spy also entangled in a separate love storyline of her own (Keira Knightley).

It was the first long contract I had had in my operating career and a big job for me. I loved being mesmerised by the cast and getting to know the characters and I didn’t expect to be in a position where I would be trying to hide tears from them between takes. It was a wild mix of scenes and tone and mostly a lot of fun but also haunting to witness the vulnerability and emotional depth with which the cast portrayed the grief, heartbreak, deceit and desperation. Sadly some powerful scenes didn’t make the edit.

The show was praised by reviewers for its blasé approach to the “gay best friend” and for creating “one of the more credible London gay guys seen on screen,” with one review noting that “his sexuality is both a defining part of his identity and entirely incidental.”
I am happiest working on productions with casts and crews that are inclusive and represents everyone. I support Pride and am proud to collaborate on projects that bring extraordinary talent and diverse stories to our screens.”

Tomorrow we build the bikes and Sunday we ride. 🙀🇮🇹 this has been months of dedication to training and all expenses are covered by the riders. Please donate if you can, it goes directly to funding and supporting world-leading research that is pioneering treatments and patient care through The Blood Fund at Hammersmith Hospital. The mountains in the video are where we are heading. 🔗 Link in bio taken in Venice, Italy by @katkamera

Every donation big or small helps vital work and care for people affected by blood cancers. On 14th June I embark on 8 brutal days of cycling over the Dolomites and Alps to help raise serious amounts of money that goes towards research, adult & child patient care, transplants & gene editing at Hammersmith Hospital. This year I am riding for my Mum who has just gone through 2 treatment programs for 2 different cancers. This will be 20th anniversary since I first rode for my Dad who we lost to cancer. Last year I rode for my godmother Maggie whom I cared for in lockdown when barriers to testing and hospital care delayed pain relief and diagnosis of her very advanced terminal cancers. Breakthroughs in blood cancers are accelerating at a remarkable pace, pioneering the therapies, technologies, and clinical approaches that will define the future of oncology. All the riders hugely appreciate any support and donations to motivate us during the gruelling days. It’s dangerous and the biggest challenge I have ever faced and you have to dig deep. I know there will be sweat and tears - I am hoping for no blood or blizzards (which I have experienced in the past) and a safe voyage of questioning why I am there only to remember “For those who suffer we ride” ❤️💛 🔗 LINK IN BIO taken in Tap Link In Bio by @katkamera

Thelma & Louise premiered 35years ago today. I saw Cannes is honouring it. It’s a big year - with many milestones. Proud of my Dad’s achievements as a designer and Jamaican Chinese member of the Windrush generation. We lost him 20years ago. We lived in Utah during the filming and visited sets before they were filmed on however we got to be there for the truck explosion shoot. Still one of my favourite films and an amazing way to be close to my Dad while watching any if his work. Shout out to the Biddle family and @alfie_biddle_film ❤️‍🩹 by @katkamera
