It’s been 25 years since my dad died. I don’t really subscribe to the ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ adage - what doesn’t kill you usually requires extensive therapy. But it does fundamentally change you. Grief changes the way you see yourself and others. The way you envision your life and future without that person in it anymore. The constant wondering what it would have been like if they weren’t gone. I think about that almost every day - the ‘what if’s?’ Maybe it’s why I so often find myself looking to the next thing while romanticising a past I didn’t actually really enjoy when I was living it. I find it hard to just enjoy where I’m at.

I guess it’s easier to romanticise something you don’t have anymore than to reckon with the thought that if you still had it, it wouldn’t be that good. Would my dad and I have gotten along as adults? Would we have anything in common? Would we have laughed at the same things? Would he find my political views tiresome? It’s the not knowing I find the hardest.

The main thing I know is that I miss him. Today especially. I don’t have any words of wisdom or poignant points to make. I think I’ll go on missing him for the next 25 years and another 25 after that. by @katrielvictoria

Snapshots from Istanbul - the gorgeous Hagia Sophia and Blue mosques, the Basilica Cistern, seaside palaces, daily commutes across the Bosphorus, pickle heaven, the colourful streets of Balat and Fener and many many friendly cats. They call Bucharest the city of contrasts - neoclassical beauties next to Byzantine monasteries next to the brutalist apartment blocks of the Communist era, dotted with crumbling buildings embroiled in legal battles over ownership that have been going on for decades. The dictator Ceaușescu‘s ‘spring palace’ blew my mind with its ornate mosaics and indoor pool. We also took a day trip to Transylvania to see Peleş Castle, Bran Castle (known as Dracula’s castle) and the Carpathian Mountains. I ate doughnuts with crème fraiche and sour cherries (papanași) every single day. What an absolute banger of a location. 🇷🇴⛪️🏊🏻‍♀️🦇🧛⛰️ taken in Romania by @katrielvictoria

A highlight of Sicily would have to be the cooking class. A former art gallery curator, Angela taught us how to make ricotta and pistachio ravioli and pear and parmesan bruschetta.
