A new garden. A new studio. And new work taking shape.
There’s something about beginning again—putting down roots, making space, paying attention to what is growing around you and what is growing within you.

This new chapter feels connected to all of it: the garden, the studio, the quiet, the mess, the questions, and the work.

I’m excited to share a little glimpse of where I am now and where the work is taking me.

More to come. 🌿🎨

Small things.

Goodwill finds—vases, jars, candlesticks, and bowls; also shiny fabric—oh, and cups! The last living stem from a bouquet, and wild plants pulled from fluffy, dry snow.

A collection of natural things, sought after, plucked, and found—growing, dormant, or lifeless in the alleyways. Detritus between homes on the south side of Indianapolis, found and bundled while trudging through mud, gravel, and puddles left by a storm or a soft rain. Walking—or more like hiking or lurking—among rundown garages next to shiny new ones with motion lights. The light shines on the weeds and scruff across once well-cared-for alleys, or backroads— in my experience, the same thing.

With my treasures in hand, back in my garage studio, I sort and arrange—categorize and plan. Matching and contrasting, moving pieces close together and apart. What makes a good composition of discarded vases, jars, and weeds? A question silently asked. This is planning—working like an artist. I am an artist. Mustn’t forget. This is work done for the greater good: to make the world a better place.

A black backdrop. The composition is set. Directed lighting enhances every detail.

Now the tools: tubes of paint, solvent jars and solvent, linseed oil, brushes, palette knives, rags, hand-prepared canvas or panel, primed and ready to receive.

One part linseed oil, two parts solvent. Squeeze the tubes—seven dollops of color, all in a row. No black from a tube, and begin. #painter #nature #goodwill by @katrinajmurray

The Far Field

The land beckons, and I pull the lapels of my jacket close. The crisp air carries a subtle, bracing breeze that nips at my neck and cheeks. My hair tickles my nose in the most annoying way.

Looking across the field, I see the far field. It has been tilled under, with no cover crop. My field was mowed weeks ago. I walk through the weeds and clumps, stumbling now and then. I want to see what has happened to that far field. It doesn’t belong to me.

The land was divided into smaller and smaller squares and rectangles long before I acquired my wonky square. At the edge of the field, I can see dust lifting from the large clumps of dirt. Between that field and mine is a narrow strip of tall, dry grass bending in the wind.

I couldn’t resist snapping off a piece. I twisted it between my fingers and carry it home. The tea kettle is probably whistling by now.

Art Commissions. The first is a commission for IU Health, the second was a direct purchase of existing work and the third was a hospital staff collaboration to celebrate a milestone. Total joy for me to work on these projects. I’ll share more of my public art commission I’ve completed in future posts.

Creative flow. Sometimes I start with a sketchbook, scissors snd and a glue stick. There are times when I can’t be in my studio as often as I’d like. Because of that time gap before I can get in there, I may start with a little free association, improvisation, grab bits of paper, old trial paintings on paper, markers, oil sticks, you name it.

Then it’s play time. Time to let go, no judgement just one thing leads to the next.

I may get lost in this play and tire before I get to a real painting, that’s ok. This play is still the work. It may lead and often does lead to new and interesting things.

Go play!
