The miracle of our tiny Sukkah, somehow managing to accommodate us still…
Every year we unpack the Sukkah and attempt to set it up. It’s the tiny pop-up ‘safari’ Sukkah which, in theory can go anywhere with you. The challenge of the pop-up is equally the erecting and the disassembly eight days later. For many years we couldn’t figure out how to pack it up at all.
But this is not the point. Even as we become more experienced in the process, inexplicably, the whole thing becomes more precarious. It’s always askew and permanently at the risk of collapse. And perhaps this is one of reasons we spend this week in the Sukkah. We leave our bricks and mortar and have faith in the flimsy, impermanent nature of the Sukkah outside.
(Huge thanks, as ever, to @rachelsophertttttt, who never fails to deliver a carload of branches, fragrant herbs and other wonders to decorate it.)
And it’s still @katrinaschwarz9’s birthday.

This autumn, Whitechapel Gallery presents This Must Be the Place: Artists for Whitechapel Gallery – a special exhibition and sale marking the Gallery’s 125th anniversary and supporting its future.

Bringing together new and recent works by 23 international artists, the exhibition explores the possibilities of painting and image-making. Across figurative and abstract approaches, the works invite slower encounters with surface, material, gesture and time, revealing meaning through layers, accumulated marks, shifting perspectives and visual ambiguity.

All works are offered for sale, with proceeds directly supporting Whitechapel Gallery, the artists and their representing galleries.

Remi Ajani, Oliver Bak, Nicholas Bierk, Tim Breuer, Gareth Cadwallader, Andrew Cranston, Nat Faulkner, Lenz Geerk, Sky Glabush,  Brett Goodroad,  Jake Grewal, Nathanaëlle Herbelin, Esme Hodsoll, Simone Kennedy Doig, Mia Kokkoni, Aaron Kudi, Shigeo Otake, Marc Prats-Quintana,  Shiwen, Ellen Siebers, Laurie Smith, Rafał Topolewski and Arisa Yoshioka.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday for the panel discussion with Alice Black and Katrina Schwarz in conversation around Adam Leef’s solo exhibition, CONTRAPPOSTO.

It was a pleasure to see everyone come together for such a thoughtful discussion, exploring Leef’s practice, the exhibition, and the ideas behind the work. We’re grateful to Alice and Katrina for sharing their insights, and to everyone who contributed to such an engaging afternoon.

Click the link in the bio to see a clip from the panel discussion!

If you haven’t yet had the chance to visit the exhibition, there’s still time as it will be on until 3 August. Follow the link in our bio to view the catalogue and learn more about Adam’s work.

The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever in Folkestone. Red dresses all over town and on the beach, building up to that joyous final performance at four o’clock. The unifying spirit of it all… So surprisingly moving I had tears in my eyes throughout. #katebush #wutheringheights #themostwutheringheightsdayever @mostwutheringheightsdayfolke taken in Folkestone, Kent by @katrinaschwarz9

Installing Now and Opening Next Week : Backyard Biennial | East of the Aldgate Pump

As part of ‘Backyard Biennial’ - an 8-week summer art festival - Whitechapel Gallery presents ‘East of the Aldgate Pump’.

Inspired by the historic water pump that once marked the threshold between the City of London and the East End, ‘East of the Aldgate Pump’ brings together 12 local, national and international artists to explore migration, community, heritage and belonging.

Spanning painting, sculpture, photography, film and installation, the exhibition reflects East London’s rich history as a place of cultural exchange, creativity and connection.

The exhibition includes works by Marwan Bassiouni, Jyll Bradley, Adam Farah-Saad with Ezra-Lloyd Jackson, Denzil Forrester, Rachel Garfield, Kabir Hussain, Laisul Hoque, Nour Jaouda, Rene Matić, susan pui san lok, Reetu Sattar and Rehana Zaman.
