The miracle of our tiny Sukkah, somehow managing to accommodate us still…
Every year we unpack the Sukkah and attempt to set it up. It’s the tiny pop-up ‘safari’ Sukkah which, in theory can go anywhere with you. The challenge of the pop-up is equally the erecting and the disassembly eight days later. For many years we couldn’t figure out how to pack it up at all.
But this is not the point. Even as we become more experienced in the process, inexplicably, the whole thing becomes more precarious. It’s always askew and permanently at the risk of collapse. And perhaps this is one of reasons we spend this week in the Sukkah. We leave our bricks and mortar and have faith in the flimsy, impermanent nature of the Sukkah outside.
(Huge thanks, as ever, to @rachelsophertttttt, who never fails to deliver a carload of branches, fragrant herbs and other wonders to decorate it.)

This autumn, Whitechapel Gallery presents This Must Be the Place: Artists for Whitechapel Gallery – a special exhibition and sale marking the Gallery’s 125th anniversary and supporting its future.

Bringing together new and recent works by 23 international artists, the exhibition explores the possibilities of painting and image-making. Across figurative and abstract approaches, the works invite slower encounters with surface, material, gesture and time, revealing meaning through layers, accumulated marks, shifting perspectives and visual ambiguity.

All works are offered for sale, with proceeds directly supporting Whitechapel Gallery, the artists and their representing galleries.

Sydney winter is the best. The perfect contrast to the endless heatwave in London.

The Whitechapel Gallery turns a hundred and twenty-five this year, and is spending its anniversary sending people out of the building so they come back into it.

Backyard Biennial: East runs across the East End until tomorrow 6 September: more than forty venues, free, and a programme that asks you to walk.
We went on a Sunday in July and began with two hours on one road, guided by the Gentle Author, who has written about this part of London a day at a time for years. He carries a folder of old prints and holds them up against the buildings that replaced the buildings in them. You look at a coaching inn, then up at a phone shop, and for a second the two hold together.

What one street holds is hard to believe. The high street, he tells us, was built wide to hold cattle overnight, before a tollgate that shut at dusk. On a site near here, in 1567, stood the Red Lion, generally taken to be the first purpose-built playhouse in Britain since Roman times. And the oldest fact on the road, in his telling, is a migration: the people who left the earliest tools here walked from mainland Europe, across land that is now the bottom of the North Sea. Everything after that is a variation.

A short walk away, the gallery is doing what the walk does, indoors.
East of the Aldgate Pump, curated by Katrina Schwarz, gathers twelve artists around migration, kinship and belonging.

And in The Ropery the weave was literal: East London once made rope, and all summer visitors added to a single growing work, the gallery and its neighbourhood twisted together by hand.

And today, 5 September, a procession sets out from Oxford House at 11am for the gallery door: textile banners and handmade percussion carried on foot, a neighbourhood arriving at its own gallery the way it always has, walking, together, carrying what it made.
