Three years ago, I came out publicly. Thirteen years ago, I survived cancer. 33 years ago, I started sending out my first book for publication. I wasn't published until 30 years later, at 43. 3's aren't always good for me, but they're always important.

Here's hoping that book #3 (We Are Not Alone) is one of my lucky ones 🤞

Banned Books Week is around the corner and there's never been a better time to celebrate the freedom to read! Please join me at Albany Library's first Freedom to Read Fest, which will have activities for all ages. 15 years ago I was scheduling my last radiation treatment and looking down at a letter with those magical words: no evidence of cancer.

That diagnosis was one of the worst things to ever happen to me, but it also marked a turning point in my life. I'd spent a lot of my time and energy on masking my real self to be more palatable to others. But after going through something like cancer, it wasn't that it became harder to mask. I just didn't want to anymore.

I don't credit cancer for this turning point. Fuck cancer.

What happened after I got that diagnosis was all me. I chose to start living authentically. I chose to stop masking so much and stop pushing down who I really am. I started realizing that I didn't need to hide, and in fact I was doing myself and the world around me a disservice by hiding.

This is me, 47 years old. My tolerance is low. Like possibly Sub-Zero. But I'm really proud of myself for what I took from this experience. What I worked hard to take.

Fuck cancer forever all day every day, but also I really like this person I am today. I never thought I'd get to meet her, but here we are 🩷🩷
