POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Katya Urban and Bird of Paradigm here to share that we just released “Remembering the Watershed” on bandcamp ~ an environmental sound piece we made using field recordings taken at different parts of the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo rivers. We made this piece in collaboration with local environmental non-profit @amigosrios which has been doing urban greening and environmental education work in schools, parks and public spaces in the San Gabriel Valley and greater-LA area since 2002. We recorded the sounds of water, birds, our own singing, buzzing power lines, highways, and conversations - at the West Fork of the San Gabriel River in Angeles national Forest, Peck Road water conservation park in El Monte (a park Amigos de Los Rios rehabilitated from an abandoned gravel quarry), the dry SGR river bed in El Monte (dry due to a dam up river), as well as the convergence of the dry San Gabriel River and the flowing San Jose creek (fed from runoff from a water treatment plant).

Altogether, we hope that these songs are an emotive and embodied slice of our experience of these waterways. We talked a lot about the colonial violence that deeply distorts and disrupts these rivers while making this piece. The entire LA area was once wetlands, criss crossing creeks and rivers fed by mountain snow melt and slowly meandering to the ocean with a breadth of ecosystems and unique forests surrounding the waters. The concrete channels, diverted waterways, destruction of habitats, and violence toward the native community that tend to these lands has led to the deeply disturbed and scarred ecology we maneuver today. We hope you listen to these sounds and get catalyzed to defend and restore these waterways and their special ecology. by @katy00sha

Excited to share this @dublab recording of Yiddish Fairytales, a trio project exploring the work of Yiddish writer Ida Maze.

Over the course of an hour, we explore Maze’s “Funvanen Nemen Zikh Di Mayses,” a story of an abandoned house on a hill where fantastical encounters unfold.

Big thank you to the wonderful @miriamudel for illuminating this poem for us. We use Miriam’s translation in the piece and her scholarship has been a guide in shaping our musical storytelling.

Also thank you to the amazing @golden.zach for providing voiceover narration for this piece.

Finally, thanks to the incredible @sadieibrahimmm who live mixed this entire recording and is an amazing DJ and person ❤️

We are so excited to present Larkin Grimm on dublab with Voidwave!

@dublab Thursday April 30 at 10am-12pm PST / dublab.com

This Voidwave episode features an explorative conversation facilitated by Katya Urban, Arantza Peña Popo and Daisy Green across states, talking to artist and musician, Larkin Grimm. They discuss making art under a capitalist system, navigating queerness, mutual aid practice, Kate Bush and Diamandà Galas, American identity, living in different cities across the world, parenting, routine and using art as an emotional outlet.

Larkin Grimm is an avant garde folk artist whose sweeping travels and encounters are imbued in their acoustic, mercurial compositions; you can hear in their music the faint imprint of Buddhist rituals and bodies bristling against leaves as they cut through the forest. Larkin was born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Atlanta, GA in the New-Age anti-capitalist commune, The Holy Order of Mysterion Agape Nous Sophia with multicultural, artistic parents. Grimm came to music after studying sculpture at Yale University, and what followed is a body of work that feels mystical, mercurial, and grounded in curiosity — touring extensively across the United States and Europe with their band while recording and producing seven studio albums of original music: North Country, Harpoon, The Last Tree, Parplar, Moons of June, Soul Retrieval, and Chasing an Illusion.

Larkin Grimm is currently based in New York City, where they continue to make music and share their curiosity with the students they teach.

Footage from my performance ‘Epitaph’ in @festivaltkrakow last month 💙 so grateful for the opportunity to honor the words and life of late poet Zuzanna Ginczanka in the place of her death ~ while sitting ‘anninut’, participants read her poems aloud in polish and english then offered them to her ‘body’ , to be wrapped and buried as I responded with live sounds. Prints are cyanotype on fabric 🌀 from L-R, ‘birth’ ‘death’ ‘rebirth’ and ‘zuzanna’

Soo many people supported me on this project!! @at___ease_ and @s4tine helped make the fabric prints, @texturas.xyz helped lots with sounds , support and input from @zuzannahertzberg @arturwabik @kimzzzfff @bloodlines_book , Agata Araszkiewicz, patty chang , my roomies , mixer borrowed from @_o9o9o9o_ 🙈
