Flying with the eagles 🦅

Starting the week off with one of the most beautiful scenes that I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. A fever of Ocellated Eagle Rays (Aetobatus ocellatus) cruising through the shallows at dusk, looking for their next meal.

Such a peaceful moment, I sat and watched them from my drone for half an hour in the fading light of the day as they effortlessly glided through the waters close to shore.

One clip from of my favourite scenes in my upcoming short film entitled “The Reef”.

An aerial view can change your entire perspective

Drones have become an incredible tool for studying and documenting wildlife over recent years. They unlock a totally new perspective on animals that can completely change how we see and understand their behaviours.

The Grey Whales of Baja California are prime examples of an aerial perspective giving us a better look at the full picture. From boat level, you can see a fin here and there, a blowhole spurt and maybe an eye when a whale is close by. From the sky, you can not only gauge the sheer size of these whales, but you can better see their curious and playful behaviours.

Turning their heads to get a better look at those aboard the boats, and even rolling on their bellies like dogs - seeing these behaviours from this vantage point is truly fascinating.

Sounds of the storm 🌧️🌊

There’s no feeling quite like being below the waves during a storm. The complete calm underwater in contrast to the craziness of the storm above the waves.

The unique perspective of watching the rain drops fall above you, as you rise through the water to the cacophony of sounds above.

Have you ever been snorkelling during a storm?

Ever wondered what goes into getting a photo like this? 👀

Well... it’s usually a lot less glamorous than the final image makes it look 🤣

Hours of waiting around, getting covered in sand, lying on volcanic rock, and trying not to spook the iguanas... all for a few seconds where everything comes together.

Marine iguanas have been one of my dream species to photograph for years, so finally spending time with them in the Galápagos was pretty special.

I also filmed the whole experience, so these clips are a little behind-the-scenes from the day. If you’d like to see how it all came together (and what wildlife photography is actually like), the full vlog is now up on YouTube.

Link is in my bio! 🎥

Have you ever seen a marine iguana before?

For every wildlife photo I post... there are usually hundreds that look like this 😅

Out of focus. Too late. Too far away. Wrong angle. Animal gone. Focus on literally anything except the subject.

That’s the reality of wildlife photography.

You can wait for hours, know your settings, line everything up perfectly... and nature can still do something completely different.

But that’s also what makes the good shots feel so special. They’re not just lucky moments. They’re the result of patience, missed frames, cold mornings, long days, and a lot of “nearly”.

So if your wildlife photos don’t look perfect every time, welcome to the club.

Most of mine don’t either. The bad shots are part of it.

M A K O

The embodiment of speed and agility, Shortfin Mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) cruise through the blues at 30mph, bursting into action at 50mph to capture their formidable prey, like sailfish and even porpoises.

They’re fearsome appearance leads to many people being scared of them, but the truth is they are usually more interested in tracking down their next meal than they are of us. An realistically, it is the shark that should be afraid of humans.

Through this image I wanted to showcase this living torpedo in all its glory. Rows of razor sharp teeth, a precision engineered sleek build, and the unique scars of a lifetime spent wandering the blue.

This is one of 10 images in my new Baja California series of fine art prints that will be released in November 🖼️

Would you share the water with one of these sharks?

Aliens live among us 🐙

Eight arms. Three hearts. Blue blood. Shape-shifting skin. Problem-solving minds. The ability to disappear in plain sight.

Octopuses feel like something dreamt up by science fiction. But they are very real, and they’ve been evolving silently for millions of years.

Every time I’ve been lucky enough to spend time in the water with one, I’m reminded that intelligence doesn’t always look like us. It’s amazing watching them and seeing them watch you back, slowly building up trust and allowing you to capture intimate moments.

They are strong, beautiful, curious, and completely otherworldly.

Happy World Octopus Day to one of the ocean’s most alien residents 🐙

Have you ever encountered and octopus underwater?

Meet one of the strangest creatures in the oceans ☀️

Ocean sunfish might be one of the weirdest looking animals in the world. They have almost a ‘half-fish’ appearance with their unique fin placement.

Now you might think that this is the famous Mola mola, but you’d be wrong. This species that I photographed in the Galápagos Islands is actually Mola alexandrini - the giant sunfish, also known as the southern sunfish.

These animas grow to be the heaviest bony fish in the world - weighing over 2500kg 🤯 crazy considering it mainly feeds on jellyfish and plankton.

I saw it emerge from the deep, that distinctive face and mouth were unmistakable. I managed to photograph this individual while it was getting cleaned by fish, picking parasites from its skin.

True oddities of the oceans 🌊

It’s not an exaggeration to say that whales sharks completely changed my life 🦈

I first went to the Maldives to research them in 2018, and little did I know that these spotty beauties would change the course of my life. What started as a 1 month research trip has lead to a career of capturing natures beauty and trying to protect it.

Safe to say these gentle giants will always have a special place in my heart 💙

I’ve wanted to see and film humpback whales lunge feeding for the longest time. Seeing it from the boat was special, but seeing it from the sky really gives you such an amazing insight into this spectacle.

Without a doubt one of my favourite moments from this year so far 🐋

Bleached ≠ dead.

And that distinction matters.

Coral bleaching is a serious stress response. When conditions become too warm, corals can lose the microscopic algae living within their tissues - the algae that provide much of their colour and energy.

What’s left behind can look ghostly white. But white doesn’t always mean lifeless.

If the stress eases soon enough, some corals can regain their algae, recover their colour and continue to survive.

That doesn’t make bleaching harmless. Prolonged or repeated heat stress can leave corals vulnerable to starvation, disease and mortality.

Bleaching is not always the end of the line.

And that’s why action still matters. Cleaner water, healthier fish populations, reduced local pressures and stronger reef management can all help give coral ecosystems a better chance of coping with the pressures they face.

As Coral Bleaching Awareness Month comes to a close, that’s the message I want to leave with:

Awareness matters. Understanding matters. But hope matters too. Because while coral is still alive, there is still something worth protecting 🪸
