Hoping for torrential mantas over the next few days over this weather

Hundreds of mantas filling the blue, one after another. The kind of downpour we wouldn't mind getting caught in. Only in Baa Atoll! 🌧️

In the sheltered lagoons of Baja California, a giant of the deep rolls beside a small boat, bringing its dark, weathered eye level with yours. 🐋

During the 19th century, commercial whalers invaded these breeding grounds, hunting mothers and calves to near extinction. Fearing their defensive maternal instinct, whalers dubbed grey whales "devil fish."

Decades after international protection ended industrial whaling, Baja’s lagoons transformed into the stage for one of marine conservation’s greatest triumphs. Today, wild grey whales voluntarily approach vessels, with mothers guiding curious calves to exchange gazes at arm’s length.

Yet recovery demands constant vigilance...As climate change rapidly erodes Arctic ice and alters food webs, shifting population numbers remind us that protecting these gentle giants is an ongoing commitment, not a finished task.

Kaushiik Subramaniam travels to Mexico to document a rare bond built on protection, patience, and mutual respect.

We know whale sharks as gentle giants of the ocean, yet their skin hosts a microscopic world that scientists are only beginning to understand. Research has investigated the skin microbiomes of whale sharks around the world, and among the microbial DNA detected was... FUNGI 🍄

If you can only visit one place in the next year..let it be this one ❄️🇳🇴

Lofoten in winter genuinely feels like somewhere that shouldn’t exist. Snow-covered mountains dropping straight into the ocean, tiny red cabins, reindeer wandering the landscape and nights under the northern lights.

I’ve travelled to some pretty incredible places, but this is still one of those destinations I think everyone should experience at least once.

Would you visit Lofoten in winter?

A little reminder that Lofoten is about to look like this again ❄️

I don’t think I’ll ever quite get over this place in winter. Red cabins tucked beneath mountains, ridiculously short days, snowstorms tat roll in out of nowhere and nights spent constantly checking the sky hoping the aurora decides to make an appearance.

And somehow, even when you’re freezing, you still want to be outside. Easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve travelled to.

Would you visit Lofoten in winter? 🇳🇴

You jump into the blue because there’s so much plankton around, thinking the mantas must be somewhere close.

Five minutes in… nothing.Just endless blue. No mantas. A little disappointing.

And then, out of nowhere, you look up…And there they are.

One. Two. Five. Ten… and all of the sudden we lost count

An entire army of mantas marching straight towards you causing absolute chaos! Five minutes of waiting it surely a lifetime of memories!
