All packed up for another new term of beginner stained glass classes in Edinburgh. Ten weeks, 24 people, several kilos of solder and over 60 sheets of glass. Can’t wait.

Sneak peek at some of the wonderful glass art in this year’s @scottishglasssociety exhibition at the Trades Hall in Glasgow. It opens tomorrow (Wed 17 Sep) and is open for a week, 11-4 daily.

The @scottishglasssociety exhibition opens on Wednesday 16th September and runs to Wednesday 23rd September in the Trades Hall, Glasgow. Why not stop in and see some amazing glass (you can buy some too). Also on display is this year’s Art on the A-Frame. It’s well worth a visit if you like glass. I’ve got three pieces on display this year, all linked to the theme Commections; three different ways of fusing glass, three different effects.

You never know how glass lace is going to react in the kiln. Different colours, different grades of frit, different thicknesses (because it’s all hand placed) can all affect how it turns out. Glass lace is a balancing act between getting the temperature hot enough to fuse the glass but not too hot or for too long that it becomes completely smooth. I want to keep the texture. I want to see some fragility where small holes appear as the glass pulls apart. I want shading and movement. But I still want it to be recognisable.
.
This was a special request from a lovely member of my family. I’m so pleased the kiln did its job perfectly. She will have to be framed for protection. That’s for another day.

PS @kate__clements is the queen of glass lace. If you haven’t seen her work, please take a look. This is all thanks to her. I did one of her classes and her Ophelia was my inspiration. I had no idea glass could do such things.

Have I used enough glass? Will the black disappear (it might)? Will it fuse together but retain the texture the way I want rather than melt completely? Have I used the right shades for the nose and jawline? Will the hair have enough yellow for a subtle blonde tint? So many questions. Only the kiln will tell.

As Frank’n’Furter he was splendid. As a student in Glasgow I spent many a Saturday night watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show in the Grosvenor cinema in Ashton Lane. My memory tells me the show started at midnight and was usually a double feature with Young Frankenstein. Or maybe it was Little Shop of Horrors. Or both. There were people at the front in costume helping the audience with the extras… rice, newspapers, water pistols… Seeing it on stage properly was also a treat, last time with @duncan__james as Frank and he did Tim proud. I’ve been following the recent broadway cast including @juliettelewis but I’m just a bit far away to be there in person.

He was such an iconic character I had to make him in glass.

Women’s voices in Iran, 2026
* Speaking out for women’s rights is treated as a national security threat.
* Women cannot sing in public spaces.
* Recording or publishing unapproved female audio content is strictly prohibited.

However, there is a growing network of women who are not staying quiet. I would like to support them. But their social media accounts are being monitored and closed. Cafes that do not enforce the wearing of the hijab are being closed for ‘public indecency’.
.
I made this stained glass portrait of a woman wearing a headscarf with the Iranian flag behind her to show support for the women of Iran who feel they have no voice. Her mouth is covered but if you look carefully you see movement, perhaps words. This started as clear glass and I painted it with Reusche paint in tracing black, then used a technique called sgraffito to reveal lighter colours behind.
.
It’s not the first Iranian woman I’ve made. A couple of years ago I made Mahsa Amini, the young woman who died in custody after being arrested for wearing her hijab incorrectly. That was sold to an Iranian family who were visiting Edinburgh. I still remember the emotion of that sale.

Bookings open at midnight (I.e. the very start of Monday 10th August) for autumn term beginner stained glass classes in central Edinburgh.

Wednesday or Thursday evening 6:30-8:30 for ten weeks September to December.
.
All materials and equipment supplied. You don’t have to be an artist! We always have fun. We relax. We learn. We make something beautiful- always.
