POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I had the pleasure of chatting with a few businesses at @grassmarketmarket today. One of my favourite parts of trading at the markets is meeting other small businesses and hearing the stories behind the brands. I know how much hard work and passion goes into the products/food on display. Whenever I'm selling at the markets, I'm going to aim to have a wee chat and share the stories to support other small businesses.

Here's Karen from @kaybeeglass. Look at how intricate and beautiful her work is. The Prince piece is mind blowing. Have a look at her page and give her a like.

What a cracking day. It was amazing to see how lively this place became.

Thank you to all the makers who embraced the awkward spaces and used their creativity to transform our little café into an art exhibition hall, and to all the volunteers who brought all the chats, banters, all the in-person interactions we’re all so desperate for in this day and age.

We hope this will perhaps become a lovely addition to our beloved neighbourhood.

THE SUBVERSIVE STITCHER
Bark Like A Dog 2025
Textile
45cm x 30cm (framed)
£300

In 2022 l saw this quote behind Self Esteem as she performed on stage at Glastonbury.

I later heard her being interviewed and she was asked about the reason behind it. She said she’d heard some young women being interviewed on the radio explaining how they dealt with unwanted attention from men. One of the young women said that they barked like dogs and said “There’s nothing that terrifies a man more than a woman who appears completely deranged.”

I found this piece of vintage linen with dogs woven in at each end and it seemed like a perfect background on which to sew that quote.

EMMA HARVEY
I am the Beast I worship
Embroidery on purficator altar cloth
27cm x 36cm
£125

In ‘I Am the Beast I Worship’, I’ve used embroidery on a purificator altar cloth to subvert a traditionally sacred object and reclaim it as a symbol of female power. The work forms part of an ongoing exploration of ritual, sexuality, and self - drawing from personal experiences and a desire to challenge inherited narratives around femininity and control. The title comes from the Death Grips track Beware, whose raw, ritualistic energy capturing the transgressive strength of the female body and spirit.

This work speaks to the We Are The Witches. We Are, Hear theme, using textile craft to disturb patriarchal narratives and reclaim space for unruly, powerful womanhood. Through this act of stitching, I make space for the unruly, the powerful, and the witch within.

KAREN McPHAIL
Between the dark and the light, between life and death.
Stained glass, copper foil
28cm x 19cm
£120

“For a witch stands on the very edge of everything between the light and the dark, between life and death, making choices, making decisions so that others can pretend that no decisions have even been made” (from Terry Pratchett’s last novel, The Shepherd’s Crown). How many of the women and men who were killed as suspected ‘witches’ left behind decisions for others to make?

This stained glass picture is framed with brass, and has a hand painted quote. It took approx 10 hours to make.

LIBERTY MOUNTAIN
Woman Undone
Textile sculpture (paper mache exterior, various fabric manipulation techniques for interior)
35cm x 63cm
£425

The sculpture’s exterior is made from simple, domestic materials, including tinfoil and kitchen towel. Typically, pearls and velvet are used to decorate the external appearance, but these standards often take a toll. The oppulence and detail of the interior reflect how sometimes, we are told that beauty can only be achieved by tearing oneself apart.

KAYBEE GLASS
I know why the caged bird sings
Stained glass
30cm x 22cm
£125

This stained glass hanging is based on two book covers of different editions of Maya Angelou’s 1969 autobiography “I know why the caged bird sings”.

The book describes the abuse she suffered as a young child, both sexual and emotional, at the hands of trusted family members. Despite this, her resilience and grace shine through and the picture shows a girl’s silhouette looking upwards at a swallow and a beautiful sun.

The stained glass hanging has been made using the Tiffany technique, and includes a hand painted quote from the book. It has been framed in zinc.

THE SUBVERSIVE STITCHER
For Whom The Bicycle Bell Tolls (2024)
Wool tapestry
14cm x 12cm
£200

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a woman, I put away childish things.

When l was 12, l was a child. In so many ways l am thankful that l wasn’t influenced or informed like the kids are now.

I used to love riding my bike around the green where l lived and sometimes l did this with my friend Betty.

One afternoon we were enjoying this rather innocent activity when Betty suddenly became quiet and said she was going home. She cycled off and l felt a bit upset. It wasn’t much fun without my friend, so l cycled around again and went in.

Then l was mortified to discover why Betty had gone home. There was blood from my period on the back of my skirt. I felt so much shame. I had only just started having my periods and wasn’t adept at being mindful about how to avoid these sort of issues.

Betty and l didn’t cycle around the green ever again.

I learned a lot that day. Mostly, that even though l was still a child, my body wasn’t.
