Adegbola Gallery is proud to present Zaria Rebels at @expochicago.

Formed in 1958, the Zaria Art Society proposed a radical shift that redefined the trajectory of modern art in Nigeria. Rejecting imposed conventions, they advanced a philosophy later termed Natural Synthesis: a framework rooted in the integration of indigenous knowledge and contemporary practice.

Bringing together works by Demas Nwoko, Uche Okeke, Yusuf Grillo, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Oseloka Osadebe, Jimoh Akolo, and Clara Ugbodaga-Ngu, this presentation revisits Zaria as an enduring mode of artistic reasoning that continues to shape contemporary artistic thought.

After six wonderful weeks, our exhibition Asidere / Duke came to a close today.

My deepest thanks to the artist, @dukeasidere, who graciously gave us a level of trust and curatorial latitude I had never experienced before. It was a privilege.

A heartfelt thank you as well to my collaborator, @imaekpo, and to the exceptional team who brought this exhibition to life: Adekepemi, Olarinre, Haneefah, James, Tejumola, Peter and Leighanne. This was a true team effort.

“Ways of the Black Spread Over the White Land” at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw opened on 25 June, curated by Oliwia Bosomtwe. Jimo Akolo’s Soldier, from my collection, is part of it — which made attending even more personal.

Soldier, alongside Bruce Onobrakpeya’s work, was first shown in Warsaw in 1969 — part of an Exhibition of Contemporary Art of Nigeria at the Palace of Culture and Science that showcased what are now regarded as the most important names of Nigerian modernism. Fifty-seven years later, they’re back, steps from the same building. That kind of continuity doesn’t happen by accident.
