Is traditional art still as important today? 👀🎨 As the art world evolves, with new ideas and mediums emerging, where does traditional art fit into the conversation? Beyond aesthetics, traditional art carries our histories, cultures and identities. How do we preserve these traditions while making room for new expressions? We get into it on Art People. Still taking in what a special week this was. So grateful to have presented the life of a few at @thearmoryshow in New York. Thank you to @adegbola.gallery for bringing the work to the fair and to Steph Hartop @stephrt_ for our conversations through the studio days and for writing the accompanying text. It meant a lot to have spent that kind of time thinking and speaking together alongside the paintings. And such a surreal moment seeing the work featured in The New York Times. Finding the paper in New York and seeing the painting there in print was very, very special to say the least! Thankyou to everyone who spent time with the work and to everyone who helped make the week happen behind the scenes. ✨

Let’s spend a little time with Aaron Kudi @aaron_kudi and his abstract paintings Notice the colors, composition, and the weight of the paintings. Where does your eye naturally rest, how do the brush stokes hold the painting together, how do they resist each other? Aaron Kudi is a Nigerian-born is an abstract painter who develops large-scale works on glazed tarpaulin and cotton duck canvas in liquid metal, ink, enamel and acrylic. His his materially driven paintings explore themes of endurance and psychological presence through layered surfaces, frequently referencing ancestral knowledge and non-Western perspectives within a modernist framework. We're curious - what did you notice first about this work? Tell us in the comments below! Remember - Looking is a practice. Slow looking asks what happens when we spend more time with a work of art. #lightworkcompany #aaronkudi #sladeschool #abstractart #nigeria
