A round of applause for Ms. McCarthy’s 5th-grade classes, who presented their summer book reports to their classmates this week! 📚📖

Over the summer, students read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. These Bearcats had several creative options to showcase their understanding of the novel, including a pizza box timeline, yearbook, comic strip/storyboard, book bag, or book jacket.

Great work, Bearcats! Keep up the creativity and your love of reading!

Ms. Glass’s 8th-grade science classes are gearing up for the annual Solar Derby! ☀️🏎️ Students are constructing their solar cars using materials such as solar panels, gears, O-rings, wood blocks, and more. Once the cars are built, students will calculate the base speed of their model cars using speed equations.

We can’t wait to see which team will win the Solar Derby later this fall!

This afternoon our middle school students had a special guest, thanks to our friends at Carmichael’s Bookstore! Debut author and Kentucky native T.C. Kemper joined us in the KCD Theater, where she spoke about her new book “The Ginghams,” a middle-grade mystery story that follows a young girl who returns home to find the people of her little town, including her best friend, chillingly changed after the arrival of the prim and proper Gingham family. She also taught our Bearcats about the publishing process through some engaging rounds of publishing trivia!

Congratulations to our 5th Grade Orchestra students who received their bow licenses today! 🎻🎶🎵

This special rite of passage recognizes their hard work, dedication, and growing skills as they learn proper bow technique. During today’s rehearsal, students proudly received their licenses, presented by Head of School Ms. Carey.

We’re so proud of our young musicians and excited to watch them continue their music journey!

This morning, our 8th graders partnered with the Upper School Ambassadors to make 600 cheese sandwiches to donate to Louisville Outreach for the Unsheltered (LOU). 💛💙

LOU’s mission is to serve unsheltered neighbors with love and compassion by providing food, essential supplies, resource guidance, care management, and advocacy.

We are proud of our Bearcats for coming together to support this important mission and make a meaningful difference in our community.

This morning, our 8th graders welcomed David Smillie, Executive Director of Louisville Outreach for the Unsheltered (LOU), to campus. For the past several years, LOU has been a valued community service partner for our 8th grade class.

Mr. Smillie shared more about LOU’s mission to promote compassion and uplift our community with hope, dignity, and support for people experiencing homelessness. He also spoke about the importance of ensuring our unhoused neighbors have the tools and resources they need to create lasting change in their lives.

Next week, our 8th graders will put their learning into action, joining Upper School Ambassadors to prepare more than 400 cheese sandwiches for LOU to distribute to people in need.

We are proud to partner with LOU and grateful for the opportunity to help our students turn compassion into meaningful action. 💙💛

This morning was a wonderful cross-divisional learning experience between Dr. Scinta’s 9th-grade Citizen, Scholar, Steward class and Mr. Taylor and Ms. Edinger’s 5th-grade Wellness class.

Our 9th graders put their own organizational and time-management skills into action by working with the 5th graders to brainstorm strategies for becoming more organized at school and at home. They then helped their 5th-grade partners reorganize their lockers for better functionality and efficiency.

What a meaningful opportunity for our 9th graders to share what they’ve learned, support younger students, and put organization into action!

Despite the heat outside, Dr. Shartzer’s 8th-grade Algebra 1 class enjoyed a cozy coloring day by the “fire” while practicing negative exponents! Students worked individually or in groups, applying the Exponent Laws to solve equations and complete their corresponding coloring sheets. Way to go, Bearcats!

Ms. Glass’s 8th-grade science class is hard at work putting the scientific method into action as they aim to create the ultimate bubble solution for their upcoming bubble party! 🫧

Students chose an independent variable to test based on what they value most in a bubble—size, quantity, float time, or something else. After researching, developing a hypothesis, and creating a detailed procedure, they mixed their solutions and blew bubbles!

Next, students will collect, graph, and analyze their data to determine which bubble solution is the perfect choice for the party.
