Congratulations to middle school student Tara K. ’31 for winning top honors in the Kentucky Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Junior Division Composition Competition! 🎼🎶

Tara took first place at the state level with her original composition for violin and piano, titled “Chasing Echoes.” Her piece was evaluated on its artistic craft and score notation, following MTNA guidelines that require works to be under ten minutes and strictly composed without the use of AI tools.

As the state winner, Tara will now advance to represent the state in the MTNA Regional Division Competition, with results expected to be announced in mid-December.

KCD audiences will have the chance to hear Tara’s piece at our upcoming KCD Orchestra concert on November 18, featuring Eva Z. ’31 on violin and composer Tara on piano. Congratulations to Tara on this accomplishment, and best of luck as she moves on to the regional division!

Teamwork in full bloom! 🌻 This week, the Middle School Gardening Club teamed up with friends from the Lower School to harvest sunflower seeds from the KCD Garden. Together, students enjoyed hands-on learning, working side by side, and seeing the results of the growing season. The harvested seeds will soon be put to good use in bird feeders around our campus. 💙💛

Last night, we had the privilege of hosting our 8th-grade parents and guardians for a special reception. 💙💛 This event was designed both to celebrate these Bearcat families and to give them an inside look at the value of a KCD education during the high school years and beyond. The evening featured a conversation with an outstanding group of KCD alumni, who shared their perspectives and personal experiences during a Q&A moderated by Ms. Deena Carey, KCD Head of School.

Thank you to our inspiring guests: Sophia Fischer ’03, Dr. Zain Rahman ’06, Dr. Rabia Buridi ’09, Parker James ’14, Malyiek McCray ’15, and Allie Hail ’17. Your thoughtful reflections offered a wonderful glimpse into the lasting impact of a KCD education and the enduring relationships that make our community so special.

Draw, Aim, Release! 🎯 This week, KCD Archery Head Coach Travis Arnold joined Coach Kruer to introduce the exciting sport of archery to all middle school P.E. classes! Students learned the fundamentals of archery, including proper stance, nocking the arrow, and drawing the bow—all essential techniques for hitting the bullseye.

We hope these lessons inspire even more new archers to join the team for the upcoming winter athletic season!

Bearcat scientists are keeping things cool! Ms. Pollitt’s 5th grade STEAM classes are teaming up with Ms. Apple’s 9th grade physics classes to design and build coolers that slow the rate of heat transfer around a mini Coke can.

Using thermal energy concepts, cost analysis, and a limited set of materials, students are putting their creativity and engineering skills to the test. On competition day later this week, both teachers will use Vernier temperature probes to measure the rate of heat transfer and determine which team built the coolest cooler!

A round of applause for Ms. McCarthy’s 5th-grade classes, who presented their summer book reports to their classmates this week! 📚📖

Over the summer, students read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. These Bearcats had several creative options to showcase their understanding of the novel, including a pizza box timeline, yearbook, comic strip/storyboard, book bag, or book jacket.

Great work, Bearcats! Keep up the creativity and your love of reading!
