How does biology become part of war?

In this episode of the War Studies Podcast, Dr Julia Pearce is joined by Dr Filippa Lentzos and Dr Gemma Bowsher from King’s College London to explore biosecurity, CBRN threats and health security in conflict.

The discussion examines how chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear disinformation is being used as a weapon of war, including Russian narratives about biological laboratories in Ukraine.

They also discuss the CBRN Disinformation Tracker, why trust in public health becomes harder to sustain during conflict, and how disinformation narratives can be adapted to different local contexts through the “Matryoshka model”.

The episode then turns to AI-enabled biology, dual-use science and whether existing arms control regimes - including the Biological Weapons Convention - are fit for a rapidly changing world.

Why is Greece betting on Israel’s Achilles Shield?

Writing in Al Jazeera, Dr Rob Geist Pinfold, Lecturer in International Security at King’s College London, examines the strategic logic behind Greece and Israel’s $3.5bn Achilles Shield defence deal.

The agreement comes at a politically sensitive moment, with Israel’s global standing at one of its lowest points in decades and public opinion in Greece largely unfavourable. Yet Dr Geist Pinfold argues that the deal reflects a wider shift in regional security.

The shadow of the US-Israel war on Iran, the breakdown of Israel-Türkiye relations and the emergence of competing regional blocs have all helped bring Greece and Israel closer together.

As he writes, "the irony is that the same conflicts that have damaged Israel’s international standing have also increased the value of its military experience and defence technology."
