YCW London were very pleased to see everyone at our panel yesterday, "China, Oil and the New Middle East: Beijing's Energy Strategy after the Iran War."

A huge thank you to Neil Hirst and Christof Rühl for a lively and insightful conversation! They highlighted how China’s proactive preparation for potential blockades or supply disruption, including creating strategic oil stocks, has allowed it to cushion its economy from major disruption.

Thank you to our moderator, YCW London's Baran Aygüven, @kcl_warstudies , who's support made the event possible, and to everyone who attended!

📢 Next Week at YCW London: Join us on Tuesday, 13 October for a book discussion with Tim Hames, former Oxford political scientist, Times leader writer, and ex-head of the BVCA, on his new book, War or Peace?: The United States and China, 2026–2049. Check our bio for tickets!

What could Israel’s election mean for the Middle East?

The 27 October vote could reshape Israel’s domestic politics, potentially ending Netanyahu’s long grip on power

But it will do little to change Tel Aviv’s long-term regional strategy

Israeli politics has shifted to the right, with a broad consensus across the spectrum on confronting Iran and Hezbollah, maintaining the military occupation, and rejecting a Palestinian state

An opposition-led government under Gadi Eisenkot or Naftali Bennett may soften Israel’s approach to Gaza and settler violence, and seek to improve relations with Jordan and Egypt

But a change in tone is not necessarily a change in policy

Israel’s security doctrine has hardened over the past three years, shifting from episodic warfare to sustained, multi-front conflict

Whether under the centre-right opposition or the current far-right coalition, military power will remain a central instrument of Israel’s regional strategy

Do you believe that if the UK suddenly found itself at war, are we psychologically prepared? Do you know what would be expected of you?

Peace has lasted long enough that, arguably, most people take it for granted.

Some analysts are now using a similar phrase for where Britain sits today. A crisis of disbelief.

After 2022, Sweden abandoned two centuries of neutrality and rebuilt its readiness within three years, official messaging, NATO membership, a public mindset shift, because its geography gave it no choice.

Britain has had eighty years of distance, and distance is the one thing that lets a country stay unprepared without noticing.

Readiness, for me, starts smaller than that. It isn’t just a government decision. It isn’t only defence spending or policy papers.

A family that knows its plan. A person who’s thought past the headline to what it would actually mean for them. National readiness and personal readiness aren’t separate questions. One, however, tends to arrive long after the other should have.

📌 Save this.

Asking the big questions of the day: submarines or aircraft carriers, which matter more in modern deterrence?

We put Professor Alessio Patalano, Professor of War & Strategy, @kcl_warstudies at King’s College London, on the spot to make a call.

His answer? “Aircraft carriers with the heart. Submarines with the head.”

Watch the latest edition of our Expert Insights series to hear why.

📣 Monday was publication day for my book, Imaging Peace 🎉 🎉 🎉

The book explores how peace is visualised, imagined and enacted through images and visual practices. It argues that how we see peace, and whose images of peace we see, matters.

Containing 80+ images and six case studies from Rwanda, Colombia, Northern Ireland, Nepal, Mexico and BiH, the book examines how conflict-affected communities and local visual and peace practitioners work with and through photography to re-build trust, contest silence, imagine peace and transform conflict on their own terms - in contexts of ongoing division and violence and in their aftermath.

Imaging Peace is the outcome of my Leverhulme Fellowship research and is the first multi-country empirical study of community-engaged peace photography practices. It presents six distinct case studies, a typology of visual peace methods, a ‘potential’ history of peace photography and identifies photography’s peace capacities.

I’m enormously grateful to the photographers, communities and partner organisations who trusted me with their work and time over these years including @everydaypeaceindicators @pcrcbih @kigaliphotocenter @jack_yakubu1, Chiapas Photography Project, @bx_gallery @vowmedia_ and @nepalpiclibrary Huge thanks to the @leverhulmetrust and everyone at @edinburghuniversitypress and @kcl_warstudies who helped get this into the world.

Imaging Peace is currently discounted via the EUP shop. Use the code NEW30 at checkout and it is available for under £20!! Grab it before the discount goes 📸 🕊️

Is deterrence about capability, credibility, or communication?

In this edition of our Expert Insights series, Professor Wyn Bowen, Head of the School of Security Studies and S&D+ Lead at King’s College London, explains why effective #deterrence depends on all three, and why context and understanding your adversary are just as important.
