“Olde Town, Augusta” —acrylic on canvas,12x12” SOLD . We moved to Olde Town when Ruby was 8 months old, and we left when Lew was 6 months old. In my mind, Olde Town is watching Ruby’s pudgy face light up at the fountain on Broad St. and picking fruit from the Loquat tree in our sun-soaked backyard; it’s the Victorian homes on Greene St., their trellises intricate as wedding cake; it’s baby Lew wrapped tightly to my chest, his strawberry cheeks damp on my chest, bitty Ruby clutching my pinky with her fist. Augusta is the honeyed light refracted in diamonds through the leaded glass of our yellow craftsman. “Hill Country, TX” was the first piece and the inspiration for the Happy Place series. Each painting is reflective of a place that has brought me joy or that I mentally visit when I need peace, and the Texas hill country looms large in my happiest memories. . In my mind, my grandparents’ house in the hills and my cousins’ family land are interchangeable with the heart of the place. It is the sound of wind chimes on a fresh basil breeze, a Great Dane named Toska escorting my grandfather from room to room, and my Nanna’s laughter floating up from her basement studio. It’s the smell of live oaks, desert willow, and linseed oil, the sharp bite of tomatillo salsa and the headiness of Rebecca Creek on ice. It’s violet shadow and mango sunrise. . What a gift those hills are to me (and maybe to you too). Details: 20x20” acrylic on canvas. A commission for my most dear high school teacher who, during the darkest season of my life, saw me and cared for me as an actual person. Not only did she not publicly shame me when I showed up late to class and reeking of cigarettes (yuck), but she listened to me! If you remember being in high school, you know how rare it is for a teacher to listen or treat you as an equal. So anyway…this is for her!
