we’re always being sold a new version of ourselves.

a better version. a cooler version. a more beautiful version.

set within a futuristic world of electric light, reflective surfaces, and translucent layers, we challenged this through imagining jewelry not as something worn, but something that evolves alongside the body. pieces that feel integrated rather than simply styled. familiar rather than fully transformative.

in this world, adornment becomes part of the same visual language as skin, light, and form - following natural contours, catching familiar highlights, and existing as an extension of the person wearing it rather than something separate from them.

at its core, second skin is a story about recognition over reinvention. about finding pieces that feel less like an accessory and more like an extension of self.

lauren pearce is a mixed media artist based out of cleveland, ohio. her use of color is wildly imaginative. her depiction of the female form is soft and encapsulating. her portraits are flawless and easily my favorite. and her talent for creating is beyond this world. please feast your eyes on this incredible woman’s artwork @laurenpearce_designs ✨

nick cave is an american fabric sculptor and performance artist based out of chicago. his best known works are his soundsuits: costumes that completely hide the individual, creating a second skin that envelops them and camouflages their gender, race, and class, compelling the audience to to watch without judgement.
his first soundsuit was created in 1992 after the brutal beating of rodney king.

“It was a very hard year for me because of everything that came out of the Rodney beating. I started thinking about myself more and more as a black man – as someone who was discarded, devalued, viewed as less than. I started thinking about the role of identity, being racially profiled, feeling devalued, less than, dismissed. And then I happened to be in the park this one particular day and looked down at the ground, and there was a twig. And I just thought, well, that’s discarded, and it’s sort of insignificant. And so I just started then gathering the twigs, and before I knew it, I had built a sculpture.” -Nick Cave

if y’all don’t already know shea diamond your life is lacking. shea is a trans singer/songwriter/goddess. the first time i heard her voice was ‘i am america’ which is the theme song for hbo’s @werehere. i had to rewind the credits so that i could listen again, shazam, and continue my love affair. she recently performed her powerful ‘don’t shoot’ for @billboard pride summit 2020 ❤️
