26 in somerville, ma 🦀🫧🪐🤍

i was gonna type a long caption about how i didn’t know any of these people a year ago and how special and amazing they are to me now. and how i want them to all meet the people that celebrated me at my 25th birthday party. and how a whole year has gone by and i really moved across the country and have planted seeds on the east coast and those seeds have sprouted into a gorgeous constellation of humans i get to learn and grow along side. how i see parts of my self reflected in each person. and how i light up every time i get to witness them in their element. they are the support that supports the support.

oh look, there is a long caption ✨ taken in Somerville, Massachusetts by @keandra.hunt

Sonnets for an Old Century by José Rivera
Directed by April Langehennig
Facilitated by Kyla Olson
Costumes: TTU costumes
Produced at Texas Tech university 2021

Wow.

100 years of black history.

I desire to speak so much on the mission and importance of such acknowledgement and recognition of how far a culture of Rhapsody, Melanin and Humanity can go trudging through the inevitable (and some if not most avoidable)circumstances life throws at us. This we all share: catching the strays of learned and weathered circumstances turned lessons

And yet before the shouts of graditude can echo from chest there is a deep roaring in my bones. Ancestral, primordial and wise.

I walk with so much pride. Solidified and in solidarity with the same raidance from

My mirror
My other life
My cadet in same armor

This piece encapsulates something lived for centuries now
And today and for a couple days more on this short month of the year.. Blackness in struggle, in joy, in liberation.

Id be remiss to not mention my fabulous dance partner in the scene above as we co-choreographed this work, with fervor and shared wisdom for the story we were telling and for the generosity within and through blackness we would be awakening in our collegiate stroll.

To the artist only know as @keandra.hunt
Thanks for sharing armor with me ❤️
I love you

🤲🏾 we’re startled by ourselves we scare ourselves by noticing our own shadows
🫦i’m sorry, but unfortunately i love being “weird” in public, talking to strangers and drinking water with NO ice
🫀i was just a girl coming slowly into womanhood when I read Adrienne Rich’s words “this is the oppressor’s language, yet I need it to talk to you.”
🍺 i pre gamed but then i walked 2 miles getting to the bar
🫁“we’re not perfect but we’re all we got.
we’re not perfect but here we are together and we’re gonna do this messy imperfect beautiful gorgeous thing to remind us how lucky we are that we have one another” ~chani

Thursday October 16th: the fabled fun fabulosity of the @yellowscenemagazine 25th Anniversary Gala. It being also the first of our 15th anniversary celebrations it was a special treat having our newest member, vocalist extraordinaire @dominiquehaces do her first performance w/ us AND having our beloved @keandra.hunt back in town for this and the phenomenal @boulderrmf (vids and pix coming!). Thanks so much to Yellow Scene for asking us to be your band, everyone who bought tickets and donated to help them keep independent journalism alive in Boulder County, and @undergroundlouisville for the great venue and sound.
