🏹 Member Profile: Bow Spider

“In 2015, during a back-country hunt with a friend, the trophy of my dreams appeared before me,” writes David Merrill, founder of The Bow Spider. “The bow was strapped to my backpack and beyond my reach. By the time my buddy got the bow released, the bull elk was gone. I swore I would never miss the moment again.”

And that’s where The Bow Spider began. So hunters everywhere can grab their bow and go.

David joined the Keep it Public, Wyoming coalition because he lives, works, and plays on public lands. Today, the coalition is made up of more than 100 Wyoming businesses speaking with one voice to keep public lands in public hands.

In a new Public Lands Day op-ed, fifth-generation rancher and Keep it Public, Wyoming supporter Sam Mead writes about the many Wyomingites whose livelihoods depend on public lands: ranchers and outfitters, miners and oil and gas workers, retailers and other main street business owners.

“It’s a delicate balance, but we’ve found a way to make it all work. And that history of collaboration is a legacy we should be proud to carry forward and celebrate through Public Lands Day and beyond.”

So what comes next? After Wyoming lawmakers overwhelmingly passed SJ-9 earlier this year, Sam calls on our federal delegation to demonstrate the same commitment to keeping public lands public.

“We need more than state resolutions. We need real, principled support from our federal delegation.”

“We’re not for sale,” writes Bryan Hamilton, a fifth-generation Wyoming rancher. “Not our integrity. Not our authenticity. And certainly not the public lands that we are all fortunate enough to own collectively.”

“To us, it’s personal. Our ability to graze livestock on these acres is what allows us to keep our multi-generational businesses viable in order to sustain the way of life that has defined Wyoming for over a century.”

Hopkins Hamilton Ranch is a cow calf operation in the Lyons Valley and a member of Keep It Public, Wyoming.

Our coalition is here to ensure that Wyoming’s voice for public lands stays strong. “Join us,” writes Bryan. “Show state leaders our collective dedication to public lands.”

ICYMI: Our new statewide poll found that more than 9 in 10 Wyoming voters oppose selling off our public lands.

“Opposition to public lands sell-offs cuts heavily across political lines, bringing together outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, ranchers, local business leaders and conservationists across Wyoming,” said Chris Lane, senior partner with Cygnal, the firm who conducted the poll.

“In surveys across the West, we are increasingly seeing that voters across the spectrum are backing keeping public lands public, because they know once they are gone, they are gone for good.”
