I feel like I’ve lived a thousand lives sometimes.

Here’s one of them.

Probably the only thing I’ve gotten into over the years that I haven’t looked back on and thought: “damn this would have been so much easier to have stuck with than running.” by @keifermadness

Two thousand. Five hundred. Days sober.

It’s feels like a lifetime ago that this number started compounding. Sometimes it gets tough to even look back and recognize the person that started the journey to this point.

Though sometimes it feels like I’ve made some major transformation into this new person, this process has always felt like a return to who I was. I’ve always enjoyed doing hard shit, that’s why I wrestled. I liked grit, and toughness and pushing my self to accomplish things. It’s been my internal motor and north start for as long as I can remember.

My sobriety journey feels more these days like I was ripping the governor off of myself. I was successful in the bar industry, and while during those years I was a mess and losing my grip on things there was still a glimmer of those internal drivers underneath all of it.

I knew there was more I could do, and it was getting buried under a bottle.

The process hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, I try to be transparent about that. The jarring thing about pulling away the substance you leaned on so heavily is when bad shit happens now you gotta feel all of it. It’s led to some of the darker times I’ve experienced in my life.

If there’s anything you all take away from my journey I share on here it’s please don’t ever give up on yourself. Though there’s been struggles, I never stopped betting on myself. My life has changed in ways I never thought were even possible.

Your messages, comments, random conversations over the past 2,500 days encouraging me to keep going or saying how I’ve inspired you on your own journey have meant the world to me. I hope I can continue to do so, and I will always be an open door for people who need someone to talk to about these things.

Cheers gang, here’s to another 2,500. by @keifermadness

My sobriety journey and how I view it has changed a lot over the years, and I’m sure it will continue to.

One thing I’m certain of is it will never define me in totality as a person.

It was a chapter, one that I will forever honor as it paved the way for so much that I’m doing now. But, it becomes less and less relevant to who I am as time goes on. by @keifermadness

I could sit here and tell @lastsoulultra about every race I’ve run, every accomplishment I’ve had, and why I think I deserve a spot on their starting line.

But I’d rather let the people who’ve been part of my journey tell that story for me.

One of the most meaningful parts of the last five years hasn’t been what I’ve accomplished in running. It’s been hearing from people about how something I’ve shared or done has made a difference in their lives.

So I’m asking something of you guys.

If I’ve had an impact on your life in any way, I’d love for you to share what that impact has been in the comments.

Maybe watching my journey encouraged you to sign up for your first race. Maybe something I’ve shared about sobriety, fatherhood, or pursuing difficult things resonated with you. Maybe a conversation we had changed your perspective on something.
Whatever it is, big or small, I’d love to hear it.

Tell your story in the comments and tag @lastsoulultra so they can read firsthand what my journey has meant to you.

I’m not asking you to tell them why I deserve a spot.

I’m asking you to tell them if, and how, I’ve made a difference in your life.

I’ve spent the last five years telling my story. Today, I’d rather hear yours.

Apparently, all it takes is a few fart jokes to win James over at dinner.

Not surprised one bit.

What does surprise me, however, is the consistency in how people talk about Cam Hanes once they’ve actually spent time with him.

They come from completely different walks of life, see the world through different lenses, and sometimes hold what would be considered completely opposing viewpoints.

Yet the message is almost always the same: you can’t help but respect the guy once you get to know him.

This same conversation came up recently when Travis Barker was on Joe Rogan’s podcast.

There’s no need to reconcile every difference in opinion or belief. Just a recognition of the person sitting across from you, the entirety of who they are, and the net positive they’ve contributed to the world.

I think we’ve gotten so accustomed to evaluating people through the lens of what we disagree with that we’ve forgotten how to appreciate them as a whole.

Sometimes it really is that simple.

What should we actually expect from race directors?

In the middle of all of the back and forth lately, the conversation with Jacob illuminated some areas I think there were some misconceptions.

At what point does holding someone accountable turn into a witch hunt?

There’s been a lot of noise in the ultrarunning community lately surrounding Cam Hanes, Mike McKnight, and anti-doping regulations. A lot of opinions, accusations, and people talking past each other.

This week, I sat down with Jacob Puzey, who’s spent over 30 years in competitive running and more than 20 years directing races, to bring a different perspective to the conversation.

We get into WADA regulations, what race directors are actually responsible for, and whether we’re losing sight of the people behind the controversy.

You don’t have to agree with someone to respect them. And you don’t have to defend every decision they’ve made to recognize the good they’ve done.

I don’t expect everyone to agree with us. That’s kind of the point. We should still be able to have these conversations.

OK maybe the first AI thumbnail was a bit mental, but it’s all about levity and fun. Lost some people and spent some goodwill I had acquired from the 95.

Honestly, I standby this episode with unwaivering conviction and this reel is a reflection of the message and tone.

Challenge yourself to consider the opposing views with the same spirit you hold of your own.

What Has Trail Running Culture Become? Who defines it?

In this episode, we analyze and breakdown the controversy surrounding Singletrack. Focusing on Finn’s attempt to prevent Mike McKnight’s access to race TOR, their attempt to prevent McKnight from earning a living in the sport and wipe away his 2026 results.

The 95 is a diverse group with diverse opinions, morales, principles, world views and how/when to seek justice. We celebrate the fullness of the 95! We believe speaking about differences in good faith conversation is the way forward.
Taking covert action and trying to weaponize your platform to destroy a man’s livelihood and access to a sport void of any real regulations is not the response the 95 supports. It’s not the culture or community trail runners embody.

Let us know in the comments where you land and let’s keep the conversation moving forward.

Tyson’s answer to this question has stuck with me for days.

The pressure he feels from surrounding himself with people like Mark Dowdle and Harvey Lewis has almost nothing to do with running.

It’s seeing how they operate everywhere else that translates into the big performances on race day.

Reading. Journaling. Faith. All of the little things.

Tyson shines so much light on what I think the real heartbeat of the trail running community truly is.

There’s something powerful about being surrounded by people whose normal forces you to reconsider your own.
