Reading across every genre because books bring me joy. 📚
Historical fiction, lit fic, sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers. You’ll find me reading it all.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Historical Fiction is my favorite genre. I love that it can teach you about history in a way text books can’t. It immerses you into a world you couldn’t otherwise experience and help you grasp the impact of historical events on everyday people.

Here are just 6 backlist WWII historical fiction books that about parts of WII history we often gloss over or share perspectives we don’t often hear.

The Nightingale - takes place in France near (and in) the occupation zone. It’s the story of 2 brave sisters who work in different ways to resist the Nazis.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - takes place in the British Isles during the occupation. It tells the story of a group of accidental friends who banned together to support one another during the bleakness of occupation.

Code Name Helene - takes place in France and is the story of 1 British woman who helped lead La Resistance.

All The Light We Cannot See - this is a dual POV story taking place in Germany and France. It follows the journey of an orphaned German boy during the war and an orphaned French girl during the war.

Hotel At the Corner of Bitter and Sweet - takes place in the Seattle and tells the story of a Chinese boy and Japanese girl and the impact WWII had on them and their communities. This book talks about the Japanese internment camps.

Sarah’s Key - takes place in France. It’s the story of a young girl who miraculously escapes the concentration camps and the impact the trauma had on her life.

A cute little town full of woodland animals, coffee, pastries, charming shops, and… murder. Count me in!

I love the Shady Hollow series by Juneau Black! These books are fun, lighthearted cozy mysteries, and the world is one of the most unique I’ve come across.

The series takes place in a charming little town populated entirely by woodland creatures. The main character, Vera Vixen, is a fox and a journalist who keeps finding herself in the middle of solving murders.

While I love a good mystery, I think what makes these books so delightful is the setting. The town is full of quirky characters, cozy shops, and all the small-town charm you could want. They are genuinely fun books and a perfect escape.

If you’re looking for a cozy mystery series that’s light, charming, and a little different, I highly recommend these.

QOTD: What’s your favorite cozy mystery series?

My Lynn Painter YA Book Rankings:

#6 Trust Fall
This one was a generous 4⭐️ for me. It was cute, and fun, and like all Lynn Painters books completelt bingable. But there were almost too many tropes. Rags to riches, enemies to lovers, small town to NYC, and more. It was still a wonderful book.

#5 Nothing Like the Movies
I have a love hate relationship with this one. It is mostly love. I gave it a 4.5/5⭐️. I hated the first two chapters. In the end though, I couldn’t put it down. You can’t help but root for Liz and Wes as a couple and on their own. I guess I’m just okay with not knowing what happens after the high school romance. That’s a me issue.

#4 Betting On You
This one was 100% 5⭐️ for me! It was so hard to pick between this one and The Do Over for the number 3 spot. This was still so great! Charlie was so funny! I loved the dynamic between him and Bailey. While this book is 0 spicy, it’s Painter’s spiciest YA book. Betting On You was a wild ride and I loved it from the start.

#3 The Do Over
5⭐️! I thought this one was going to be cheesy, but it was not! I loved the Ground Hogs day vibes and the two characters were such real people. They had depth and you uncover more about the main characters than in other teen romcoms. Plus, I liked that I only got 1 POV. It really helped the book land so perfectly.

#2 Fake Skating
Another 5⭐️ read! This was so fun to read and everything fell together so wonderfully. I loved both main characters’ lives and goals moved the plot. Nobody fully fell into the other’s life. They had their own lives that collided.

1 Just Like the Movies
5⭐️ I devoured this book. Wes was a great MMC and I really like Liz too. I loved all the nods to movies and soundtracks. Everything was woven together beautifully. I really enjoyed seeing an MMC who was that guy who annoys you to get your attentio by @keightysreads

I read the Harry Potter series for the first time, and I absolutely LOVED it!!

I’ve always loved the movies, but I have to admit, I thought the hype surrounding the books had to be at least a little overblown. Well, I was WRONG!

I expected to enjoy the stories, but what completely surprised me was just how exceptional the writing was!

The character development, the world-building, the foreshadowing, the way seemingly insignificant details become incredibly important several books later … I was constantly impressed by how thoughtfully and intentionally this entire series was written.

One of the things I appreciated most was how the books grew and matured alongside the characters. The themes became more complex, the relationships developed greater depth, and the stakes grew higher. Even the magic shifted from Harry discovering then whimsical and a fun side of it to a more serious and impactful reality. The books genuinely aged with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and I thought that progression was brilliantly done.

The story telling is exceptional! I appreciated and enjoyed these books so much more than I ever expected. Honestly, I found myself thinking about the world building and storytelling and messages with the same depth as when I read The Will of the Many by James Islington.

All seven books were 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An entire series that is all 5 stars and one this long that remains engaging and brilliant is so impressive. Rowling did an excellent job with these books.

And I have to admit, I have a completely new appreciation for the Harry Potter fandom. I understand why people have loved these books for decades, why they reread them over and over, and why this world has meant so much to so many people.

Consider me thoroughly impressed. And officially a fan! by @keightysreads

The Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjalian is a wonderful book! It’s historical fiction meets legal thriller, set in 1662 Boston, where the religious and cultural climate was laying the groundwork for the Salem Witch Trials just 30 years later.

Mary Deerfield’s story was inspired by the true story of a woman who sought a divorce in Puritan New England. The book even incorporates excerpts from historical court records!

The story was so engaging, and I loved watching Mary grow and be transformed by the world around her.

I studied the religious climate of this period extensively in school, and I found that this book brought so much of that history to life. It helped me better understand the real implications of the religious beliefs and cultural expectations of the time.

One of my biggest takeaways was just how deeply American culture continues to be shaped by the beliefs, traditions, and institutions brought here by European settlers nearly 400 years ago.

I love when historical fiction doesn’t just tell a compelling story but also deepens my understanding of history and the world we live in today!

Have you read The Hour of the Witch? Do you enjoy historical fiction that explores real historical events and cultural history?

⚠️ Content warning: This book contains graphic depictions of domestic violence throughout.

October TBR status update:

Of the 6 books on my list, I’ve started 3. Hour of the Witch is finished!! Spell Shop has just started, and I’m on chapter 3. I’m also about 80% through Mockingbird Court.

Not too bad, right? I’m hoping to keep going and make a little more progress on the rest of my October TBR! How is your October or End of Year TBR coming?

Most of you probably know that I LOVE to read, but what you may not know is that I also have a normal 9–5 corporate job! 📚

And while I love getting lost in a good story, I also really enjoy reading books that challenge the way I think and help me grow personally and professionally.

The Introvert’s Edge to Networking by Matthew Pollard was one of those books for me!

This book was SO encouraging and eye-opening! It completely changed the way I think about networking and building professional relationships. I especially loved how practical and approachable the advice was.

Whether you’re an introvert or not, I genuinely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get better at networking, build meaningful professional connections, or grow in their career.

Have you read any books that completely changed the way you approach your work or career? I’d love your recommendations!

Are we on the same page? What works for mom doesn’t always work for daughter, and vice versa. But more often than not, we land on the same page, or close to it.

Keighty and I are starting a series where we share our thoughts on the same book.

Last month we both read Anatomy of an Alibi by Ashley Elston. Here are our thoughts:

Keighty’s Review:
I absolutely loved Anatomy of an Alibi! What struck me most was that I had never read a book with this premise. The novel interwove themes of truth and deception around the creation of an alibi, but not for the reasons you might think. It carries that idea seamlessly from the very first page to the very last.

On top of all that, I didn’t have the ending figured out. The story unfolded so that we learned what happened slowly, with enough foreshadowing that I never felt blindsided, but not enough to guess the ending. Some of this was because of the deception each character was harboring (even the good ones), which drove home the idea of creating a facade.

Amy’s Review:
Timing really affected this one for me. I read it on the heels of a 5-star thriller, and I did most of my listening in bed instead of my usual drive-time listening.

Ashley Elston wrote a thriller unlike any I have read. I kept changing my mind about “who did it” and “why they did it,” and I still didn’t guess right until Elston revealed the answers at the end. The characters were memorable, and the storyline, centered on the decisions you make and how they can follow you (and destroy you), was compelling and relatable (not something I often get out of a thriller).

I would love to see this as a movie!

QOTD: Have you read this one? Whose review sounds closest to yours?
