I started this account to document my journey back to reading after a difficult season. I had no idea what joy this decision would bring!

From my daughter, @keightysreads, who was the drumbeat that got me reading again. From @bookmarkedbybritt welcoming me to Bookstagram in my first post to the constant encouragement and friendship from @amberreadsitall and @bookishbaristareviews, this space has been about so much more than documenting the books I read. It has been about you, about community, about the books we love, and the authors we support.

I told myself October was for reading the books I already own. Then the preorders shipped, a blue box landed on my porch, and some of you started making recommendations I couldn’t ignore. So here we are. 🍂

Let me explain the stack.

Two preorders finally came home: Life Out of Order and Peck & Peck. I’ve been counting down to both, and they’re finally here!

My Book of the Month box was small, but they’re two I’m very excited about. Bad Words and Queen of Lombard Street both released this month.

Two of these are entirely your fault. @bookishbaristareviews told me I would love Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers and @readingresister raved about Saving Noah. Thank you both for the push. Im holding you to it! 😉

@keightysreads has been telling me I’d love Isabel Ibañez, so What the River Knows and Where the Library Hides are now officially on my shelf. (I’ll report back on whether she was right.)

And three more to round out my cozy-spooky reading season:

Falling Like Leaves, because fall romance at $5 from Barnes & Noble right now is not something I’m strong enough to resist.

Flowers in the Attic, a reread. How has it been 40 years? I was far too young to read this book at 14, and I suspect I’ll read it very differently now.

Something Wicked This Way Comes, another favorite from my teen years that somehow never made it onto my shelves.

I love the Practical Magic series by Alice Hoffman. When I heard Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, and the original cast were returning to do the sequel, I was so excited. I planned to reread the series in September, but life… I planned to see the movie the weekend it released, but life…

Tonight, the stars aligned and @keightysreads and I finally got to see it. On the last night it shows at our local theater no less!

The sequel was just as delightful as the original. This is one of those rare times that the movie is as good as the book! I’m a fan.

PS. I accidentally grabbed Practical Magic instead of Practical Magic 2 (aka The Book of Magic). But you get the idea. 🐦‍⬛

Are we on the same page? What works for mom doesn’t always work for daughter, and vice versa. But more often than not, we land on the same page, or close to it.

Keighty and I are starting a series where we share our thoughts on the same book.

Last month we both read Anatomy of an Alibi by Ashley Elston. Here are our thoughts:

Keighty’s Review: I absolutely loved Anatomy of an Alibi! What struck me most was that I had never read a book with this premise. The novel interwove themes of truth and deception around the creation of an alibi, but not for the reasons you might think. It carries that idea seamlessly from the very first page to the very last.

On top of all that, I didn’t have the ending figured out. The story unfolded so that we learned what happened slowly, with enough foreshadowing that I never felt blindsided, but not enough to guess the ending. Some of this was because of the deception each character was harboring (even the good ones), which drove home the idea of creating a facade.

Amy’s Review: Timing really affected this one for me. I read it on the heels of a 5-star thriller, and I did most of my listening in bed instead of my usual drive-time listening.

Ashley Elston wrote a thriller unlike any I have read. I kept changing my mind about “who did it” and “why they did it,” and I still didn’t guess right until Elston revealed the answers at the end. The characters were memorable, and the storyline, centered on the decisions you make and how they can follow you (and destroy you), was compelling and relatable (not something I often get out of a thriller).

I would love to see this as a movie!

My current #4under400 !

This was SO hard. Most of my favorite books are over 400 pages or in a series or both.

So, here in no particular order are:
👻 Home Before Dark by Riley Sager - a thriller that keeps you on your toes!

⚡️Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling - this is kinda cheating because it’s a whole series recommendation. Rowling is a phenomenal writer. If that much eye-reading is intimidating, the audio books are just as good (& the new full cast audio editions are immersive)

💛 Anxious People by Fredrik Backman is just fantastic writing. Period.

🧹 Glory in the Ordinary by Courtney Reissig is meeting me right where I am and genuinely life-changing. It is a desperately needed commentary on how we view work. I already know I will be coming back to this one again and again.

Proof it doesn’t take a million pages to write a five star novel. Here are 4 books under 400 pages that I rated 5 stars. They also happen to be four of my favorite books:
