Keith Ashcroft, Both/And, Distemper on canvas
OBJECT SUBJECT - Curated by exhibiting artist Josie Jenkins, Object Subject is a group painting exhibition of works in which objects are either clearly present or ambiguously implied. PAINTERWRITER

Saturday 12th September to Saturday 3rd October 2026.
PV Friday 11th September, 6-8pm.

PainterWriter is a group painting exhibition that investigates how painters’ own practices influence the forms, concerns and tropes that appear in their writing. It is a two-fold exhibition, presenting paintings by twenty-one painter-writers alongside an example of their writing made across and within the production of paintings.

Although painting has long been interpreted by art historians, theorists, critics and art writers, what we call the ‘painter‑writer’– the painter who writes – is a central yet critically overlooked figure. Their co‑extensive writing‑with‑making materially reshapes painting’s meanings and values from ‘inside practice’.

By analysing this field, PainterWriter seeks to reveal the distinctive insights painters bring to writing and to highlight a significant but under‑acknowledged area within painting discourse.

‘Movement No.1 (Myth Frontier)’ oil on canvas, 100cm x 120cm, WIP.

Been working on this painting for a while now for a group show in Paris next month. Feel like it’s possibly doing something interesting, but I’m not wholly convinced by it yet…or haven’t quite caught up with it. It’s changed a lot over the last few weeks. It may change some more!

The title of the painting partly came about after a chat with my good pal Dave Newton about Westerns. Dave pointed out that an earlier version of the painting reminded him of the end scene of the 1956 John Ford film ‘The Searchers’, (which was a precursor for the European Westerns to follow). Makes complete sense, the painting having been constructed and felt out via a series of composite parts grafted and fictionalised within an inch of their life - feels like a kind of Spaghetti Western with no tangible sense of linear time or narrative beginning, middle or end. taken in St Helens, Merseyside by @keithashcroft

Next show at Oceans Apart. Opens this Saturday, 4-6pm. All welcome.

@oceansapartgallery presents…

SLIP
13th June - 4th July, 2026
Open Saturdays, 12-4pm
PV Saturday 13th June 4-6pm, all welcome

SLIP brings together ten artists whose practices explore the boundaries and possibilities of paint, extending beyond the flat surface and into clay.

Clay is Just Thick Paint, a phrase often attributed to Peter Voulkos, proposes ceramic surfaces as sites for painterly experimentation. In this understanding, painting and sculpture converge: wet clay, slips, and glazes are handled like impasto, built up, scraped back and reworked to create expressive forms where colour, texture, and shape become one. Together, these works propose a porous boundary between disciplines, where painting does not end at the edge of the canvas but continues, materially and spatially, into the round.

The Space of Painting.
Looking forward to this! Great to be showing work at Rogue Project Space @rogueartists_studios alongside an amazing group of artists.

Opens Saturday 4th April from 2-5pm. All welcome!

The Space of Painting brings together the work of 9 painters practising across a range of idioms, all of whom engage with expanded conceptions of space beyond the formal or compositional constraints of painting itself.

Maurice Blanchot’s The Space of Literature (1955) reveals strange paradoxes in the act of writing and the creation of a literary work. In trying to make something other from language, its ‘work’ is that which stands apart and distinct from its material source and represents the effort of writing to separate from that which contains it.

This is also the task of painting, because painting is intrinsically an act which creates something other from the world, our perception and experience. The endeavour to create this something other is to go beyond perception into the space of painting, which the work in this exhibition exemplifies. In the realisation of their vision, these artists are engaged in a material discourse with indeterminacy.
